Metal detectors

Ok, I'm a constant lurker, don't post very often, but have a dilemma I'd like forumites help with. I have a pleasure ride tomorrow, horse has lost a shoe in the paddock. I have someone who can put the shoe back on for me if I can find it. It's a fairly small paddock, but past experience tells me how hard it will be. I've discovered that there are metal detector apps for iPhone. Has anyone tried one? Any opinions? Thank you!

Try it on a test piece of metal on the ground. Results should be put be pretty conclusive either way.

Thank you - I've tried at home and seems to pick up metal, but can't try it for real until the morning. Just wondered if anyone had used one.
