Dear All
Im interested in other people whose horses or ponies are on Metformin for EMS. My pony's insulin count is down below 100 now, (it was over 900), and the vet has stopped the metformin.
1) If your pony has stopped metformin, did they stop in one go, or was it gradually reduced?
2) Any side effects from metformin? My pony had 4 scabby legs which cleared very quickly once medication stopped.
Many thanks for any replies.

My friends pony was weaned off it gradually. He now has Metaslim, I think from Simple Systems.

Metformin is also used to treat humans and I was taking it for about 18 months and it made me feel truely awful so you may find you have a very spritely pony once it is out of their system!!!

One of my ponies is on metformin. His dose has been reduced a little since he started on it. I have not seen any negative side effects. In fact it has changed him for the better. He has got his old zest for life back since he's been on it :)

My pony was on it twice, no side effects (other than manky foal that we didn't know was in there but that's another story & probs nothing to do with metformin)

Both times she stopped we just stopped with no weaning off it on vets advice :)

My gelding had EMS and was on Metformin, it completely changed him for the better - he'd been so miserable and depressed and once he was on this he was a completely different horse and I couldn't believe the difference it had made. He didn't have any negative side effects from it x
