Hi,

I've got a 23 year old semi retired pony. He's been my best friend through uni etc and I can't imagine parting with him. However, in the last 6-9 months my mental and physical health have rapidly declined (sort of why he's become semi retired). Whilst I'm sure he's not too fussed about becoming more of a paddock pet, I do worry that the lack of routine isn't great and moverover I worry about what would happen to him if I was to end up in hospital for an extended period of time (something seeming more likely day by day).

I can't afford to put him on livery, I've got family who'll do basic checks but they don't want the burden full time. I don't have the time / energy to be able to sell him nor do I want to. I worry a lot about loaning him out as there is no one I know personally who'd have him but then I don't know what to do...

I don't know if anyone has experience with similar situations or any advice?

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Lean on your family, you maybe think they don’t want the burden but when it comes to it I’m sure they will happily help you for the time you need as having you healthy is more important than the extra time it takes for them to look after your pony. They will know how important he is to you.

Sending you lots of hugs and feel free to talk if it’s something you think you need, my messages are always open ❤️

Are you on a yard? There have been people on my yard suddey unable to care for their horses for all sorts of reasons and we all rallied round and got on with it.

I think most people worry about this happening to them and so will help.

I'd imagine a local charity might take them on temporarily too.

Write detailed instructions - farrier and how often, water needs filling daily and cleaning monthly, etc etc etc and give copy to family.
Also set up group WhatsApp - so they can send you pics and assure you ok if you are in hospital.
Have a little fund set up and a few possible names of people who might check horse once a week and advise.
