All my feed is secured in black bins with the lid on to keep the vermin out. However, I opened up one bin to find a couple of mice and one very dryed out dead one.
Not sure what to do with the feed as the bin was full. I am worried about disease transmition. I was thinking of scooping out the top layer of feed and binning it and using the rest or should I bin the lot ? 30kg :-( seems such a waste but don't want to take a risk on harming my boy.
Thoughts......

I'd feed it personally

I'd feel differently if it was a rat mind!

Scoop off the top layer and wipe around the top of the bin if you are worried maybe?

I wouldn't worry about it, maybe scrape the top bit off as it may taste off but that's all. Think about what probably gets in your hay barn, yet you still feed hay!

How long does your feed last if a mouse had died & dries out in the bin? I'd be more concerned about it going musty & mouldy to be honest.

Do you know how the mice got in? Was it a hole chewed through, or wasn't the lid on properly? Rats get in these things, but have never had a mouse get in a bin unless it had a swing top! I know we have mice in the feedroom, but not the bins..

I would be wary of the feed if you think the mice will have peed in it. Won't kill the horses, but wouldn't be very nice!

Perhaps swop the plastic bins for metal?

I would just use it get rid of the mice and use it up it is a waste and god knows what has been in it at the feed store or manufacturers I did throw away the made feed that had rat droppings in and bought metal bins but that was because it was rats. I did wonder about rat pee I must admit it must be everywhere as we are never more than 6ft from a rat wherever you live

I think I'll scrape of the top layer and feed it the Shetland as he has a cast iron stomach.
Thanks for the feed back not sure how the mice got in as I had put a hay bale on top of the lid to stop it moving if attacked. Little ******s, I shall be having words with my cats and investing in some traps.
