Micheal Peaces article in oct Horse and Rider

Has anyone read this article that can explain it to me. I really do not understand whatneutral reinforcement is about.

I haven't read the article - but my pure guess would be (I'm not into jargon!) - as an example:

You're riding a horse and he bucks - you beat him - that's negative re-inforcement (or punishment).

You're riding a horse and he doesn't buck - you pat him and tell him 'good boy' - that's positive re-inforcement.

You're riding a horse and he bucks - you quietly continue to ride forward - OR
he doesn't buck - and you continue to ride forward quietly. That's neutral re-inforcement!

That's how I would understnd it - and it's how I try to train; don't make a song and a dance about it - expect good behaviour - so you don't REWARD it as such; assume bad behaviour is a result of a misunderstanding so don't PUNISH it - just ride through it. But I don't give it a label other than common sense!:D

Thank you very much for our explanation I appreciate you taking the time to explain and that does make good sense . Why are you up at this time of night?

I read the article and yep Janet what you have said above good old commom sense.

Why we need to find yet another label and more jargon I have no idea but I suppose it sells more books!

No doubt if we are very lucky Betterhalf (aka Mrs Peace) will pop on and give us the official version of just what it was all about, I noticed she was trying to whip up interest earlier in the week but the thread got pulled before she managed to point us all in the direction of this months Horse & Rider.
