So I brought G in from the field this morning as usual and didn't notice anything particularly unusual until I gave him his feed bucket, then suddenly noticed (with a gasp of horror!) that his lips were doing a Mick Jagger impression......

Both side of his mouth (worse on right), were swollen, from the corner of the mouth running forward by about an inch - bee stung comes to mind! Very comical looking, but obviously I didn't laugh (well, I did after I worked out he was ok.....)

He didn't have any apparent pain and ate his feed normally so I didn't think there was any need to panic. I gave him a bute for anti-inflammatory properties and 'massaged' them a bit to aid blood flow and monitored for the rest of the day.

This evening they look pretty much normal, but the big question is, what caused it?

I would have said bite or sting, but it was on both sides of the mouth and not continous round the front, so I'm guessing something he ate that 'stung' him on the way in? The field has some nettles and thistles at edges, some docks, but they pretty much leave all that alone as the grazing is good. We also have some clover, very, very few field buttercups and bits of sticky bud. Probably some other species I haven't identified, but what do we think might have done the damage? Anyone seen anything like this before?

Hoping we don't get a repeat tomorrow morning!

Mine once came in with his whole top muzle swollen and he looked like a hippo - it was actually quite funny and he couldn't work out why I was laughing at him!!

Like yours, he was in no discomfort, and could only assume it was a bee sting. We do have quite a lot of clover and often see bees bumbling around it. It went down within 48 hrs and wished in hindsight I had taken a photo!

Was it like this?

My boy reacts to everything! We put it down to something he'd eaten or touched. Didn't seem to bother him. Only ever happened the once though so could have been a sting. We couldn't find anything in or outside his mouth.

Quite scarily (amusingly?) it was even bigger than that Sirocco!

He is fine this morning, so I'm thinking a sting, as the reaction was so large, but he must have annoyed something for it to have a go on both sides! I should have taken a photo - it was so puffed out the sides of his mouth were sticking out. Maybe he just had botox - he is quite vain :)
