micklem bridle

I paid slightly over the odds for one from hireamicklem , which IMO was worth it to be sure the horse liked it and that I got the right size. I also got loads of invaluable advice on adjusting it correctly.

I then bought another 2nd hand, but barely used, on ebay, about £40 cheaper

I didn't know you could hire them to try - thank you Cragat! I've been wondering about one of these for a while but the price is off putting if you don't know where it will work or not!

The sizing is a bit funny...

Watch out for Rideaway offers as I got £15 off mine and free postage too. Big fan of the bridle.
All of the the above. I have a Rideaway code BBVJ15 valid 27/12/13 to 28/2/14, the offer is £15 off when you spend £100. There may be other valid offer codes around at the mo that I don't know of.

Thanks, the BBVJ15 code has only given me £4.99 off :(

My mum's section D is between a cob and a full size bridle, so would you recommend a small horse?
Just spotted they do standard horse too, so I'll probably go for that if I can get the code to work

Probably because the offer starts on 27/12!! ;)

Small horse sounds right. I got the largest competition one for my 16.1 ISH last week for my birthday.

Must say I felt a little out of control the first couple of times in terms of lack of brakes, however in my lesson Saturday, instructor tightened the bottom strap and I braved the bridle yesterday in a dressage comp and although warming up was slightly hairy, he was great in the tests. Horse is defo a lot happier with it; I'm just not sure yet. Sorry off subject OP!

My mare is between a cob and a full and I went for standard horse. It fits her perfectly. She is literally in the middle of all the buckles.

I bought mine from parklands near Sheffield, very helpful in there, it was a special order mind.

I bought one recently from Hope Valley Saddlery's Ebay shop. Emailed them first to ask if I could return it if it didn't fit, they said yes. It arrived a couple of days later, tried it. It didn't fit. Returned it, money refunded that day. I don't think you need to pay over the odds to hire one and check the fit, only to make sure your horse goes well in it.

why is lack of brakes a problem with this bridle if you are using your usual bit unless you are using the bitless option?

Sizing is strange, I opted for standared horse and they gave me a full. However the full fits my heinz 57 (very light cob) just fine.

However I am loving it. Best bit of tack I have ever brought.

I got mine from Old Mill Saddlery. Bought a standard horse for a 16h ISH apt hat took a full size bridle on near top holes and fits lovely. Early indications are that it's a brilliant piece of kit!

Nope using normal bit (NS Starter). I think because the Micklem is a lot freer (read looser) than the grackle he events in. Not a bad thing just felt very different the first couple of times.

I adore mine, got mine off Ebay paid a little less than full price. I have a 14.2hh Conemarra, they're quite a strange fit, it fits perfectly everywhere, except the strap that goes flush against the cheek (similar to a bridle throat lash). I contacted Hire a Micklem Bridle and they said they had spoken the Horseware/Micklem directly and they've had a few problems with the measurment of that strap, they're hoping to release a new one. But at the end of the day I just sent it to tack repairs and cost me a couple of quid to get it legthened :) Adore mine!

I love my micklem, paid £108 for it from trot2.com (for a multi), arrived the next day. The horse loves it too, much much happier about having it on and now works very nicely in it. It took a while for both of us to learn to work in it well as to start with we had the two extremes: bits where he was much worse than in a normal cavesson and bits where he was working much better. He is now a lot more consistent so give it time to work! Also tried it bitless (just attached to the noseband rings) and my lad loved it!

Just a note on the sizing as there seems to be a touch of confusion.

pony = pony
small horse = cob
standard horse = full
large horse = x-full
