I bought my horse last February and while he was getting vetted the vet found a microchip that wasn't registered on his passport(no microchip on his passport) but the vet did a quick data base search and said that there was nothing to suggest that he was stolen or not the same horse (sigh of relief) but he said it looked like it might be an old irish number.

recently i have started to look into his number on the internet but it is a really strange number that doesn't seem to be registered any where  he is now about 16 and i have a full history back to when he was around 8 but his passport has very little detain on it.

just wondering if any one can shed a bit of light on it :) thanks

the number starts:116 has six other numbers and finishes with: A

Have you spoken to Pet ID and the other big companies? They may have changed the numbering system since you got him. Where's his passport from? Phone them and ask what chipping companies are in their area. North or south Ireland?

Join the exclusive club :D. I would dearly love to find out a bit about my lovely horse before he came to me, but his passport was lost by the dealer, so I had to repassport, and his chip number indicates that he's a cat :D. I'm Irish myself, and can completely envisage the situation where a smalltime breeder and vet have the conversation that goes "someone told me all the horses need chips now"... "ah, don't be worrying about that now, I have a few auld chips here we can use..." ;)

Many a true word spoken in jest.

I have my own microchips and have had for years. I got a bulk order when I kept a lot of dogs and had a passing fancy to micro chip the lot. Fortunately, the mood soon passed. My vet is quite happy to use them and, so long as the number is on the passport, I don't think there is any requirement for them to be registered with any central registry.

I, too, have Irish ancestry. It seems to be a national characteristic not to be too concerned about bureaucracy! Anyway, if anyone has a horse that's a dog, he's mine. How traceable do they need to be?:D (I'll let you keep the cats!;)).

:D. Love this!

Glad there are a few more confused horses and owners around (mine never gets let away with it, everybody miaows at him ;)).

I'd still love to know where he came from, though, so if anybody knows anybody in Ireland who runs a joint cattery/stud farm, please do let me know :D

I have two of my horses microchipped with generic pet chips, such as you'd use for a dog or any other pet. They have the barcodes added to their passports and are registered with a pet database. Oh, and I'm Irish Too!

Just in case someone is already fashioning an effigy of me and planning to stick pins into it, I should probably add that I do have the registration form for the micro chip stuck in the fly leaf of the passport, so a new owner can get a pony purchased from me registered!:D

(Just not sure whether that should be the breed society or The Kennel Club....).

Oh, that's interesting! Are they 15 digit ones? I'm still searching, in the hope I can find either the person who bred the horse or the vet who chipped him, but it's a 9851 number, and when I started searching (6 years ago), nobody seemed to know anything becausethey felt it was the wrong kind of chip.

I'm guessing if the passport hadn't "gone missing", we would be fine. Shame, as he is a really lovely horse and I would like to meet the person who was clearly very good to him as a youngster.

I find this all very worrying and annoying tbh. My horse was stolen 6 years ago, he is microchipped and I am relying on this to identify him should he be found. I certainly wouldnt bother with microchipping again - freezemark every time for me now!

I informed the microchip company when he was taken, I may contact them again to ensure he is still on their 'missing' list, but really if people are using any old chips, whats the point?

Thank you :)

We did contact Identichip directly back in 2006 when we first got the horse, but as the chip had never been registered, it was just a dead end. Our only hope was to find the vet who'd bought the batch of chips, but they couldn't tell us that.

Because regardless of what purpose it was bought for. If your horse is scanned in the future it's unique ID number will show up. Up to you to register the chip.

The chip is registered and I have all his paperwork, passport and receipt from when I bought him. Problem is finding him, freezemarks are visible, chips arent.
And as we all know its way too easy to get a new passport and how many horses are actually scanned for chips - only one person at my yard ( 14 people) have ever had their horses scanned.

I am hoping that one day his MC will identify him, but I realy do think its a long shot tbh.

Caitlincal have you tried www.europetnet.com or www. petmaxx.com? Also the Horse Passport Agency have a box you can try to trace a chip on their website since the demise of NED.

Just tried it now but it says no results found :( starting to think his chip was never registered.

just e-mailed owners who had him since he was 8 and apparently they had no idea he had a chip  i am now his second owner since them and i am the only one to notice that he has a chip!

just out of interest what happened to all the information on the NED website? Has it all just gone to pot

I have reason to believe that "some" information "may" still be found on the NED website "but" you have to do a google search first and hope that the search throws up the NED details page for the horse you are looking for

I only know this as I was looking for a certain stallion name and the google results brought up NED passport details for one of his progeny (but it was in the print type form not how it was on the website)
