The vet came on Tuesday to vaccinate and microchip Chester. I couldn't be there but my friend text me to say he was already microchipped. The vet wrote the number down but thats it.
Where can I find which company his microchip is registered to so I can change the name?

If you phone Petlog, they will tell you if it is their chip.
If its not they can give you the name and number for the body concerned.
They will write/contact the previous owner and then if they do not respond after 30 days (or immediately to say yes he was sold and not stolen) they will transfer him into your name.
This may involve a fee.

Microchipping is unfortunately not much good as there is no central register for microchips. Also vets are not compelled to return the details of the horse and owner to the microichipping company concerned. There are at least 7 different microchipping systems and the scanner for one system may not identify other microchipping systems.
Freezemarking is the best system as anyone can read a freezemark and there is a central register held by Farmkey for their system with a 24/7 helpline.

Peter, just to ask a question.... can you let me/us know which are the most common readers?

Got my HF scanned this afternoon with 2 different readers & no chip showed up (he was chipped by previous owners only last November 2 counties away from me).
Now the 2nd scanner is one commonly used for those which come over from Ireland & we've had success with most in the past.
The other is a pretty good one used by RSPCA inspectors locally.

I will whizz HF through the body scanner next time am up at the vets, but was just wondering what the average is for 'missing' chips on horses which have been chipped :)

There was a batch of faulty chips, I can't remember which make.now. letters were sent to last registered owners with a voucher for vets to check and insert a new chip if necessary. Could be one of those?
