With reference to my perviouse posts about pulling my youngsters mane.

Boots seems to be overly senstive about having her mane combed, she is fine to brush it with a plastic curry comb but becomes a bit on edge if its done with a comb, she also wont let me pull even 2 strands of mane out just useing my fingers, she wont let me plait her mane just as it is either and she wont even let me cut it with sissors!! if i do try she becomes very ajertated(sp), head tossing, trying to squash me against the wall, walking back and forth while tied up, threating to kick out and bite.

I spoke to the lady i bought her off last nite and just in convosation she mentioned that Boots obversly was microchipped and could that be making her overly senstive around her neck area? She said that Boots had never had her mane pulled before so it cant be antisipation(sp) she must just be overly sensitive.

So how do i over come this in general? Boots wont even let me cut her mane with sissors! Has anyone had anything similar with a horse thats been micro chipped? I dont know when exactually she was micro chipped, I'd guess at a few weeks old so its not like its new, shes 15 months old now. Will she grow out of this? Also any ideas on what to do with her mane (that dosnt require touching it, yeh rite..)? Its getting long and i dont want to have an even bigger battle to sort it out next year.

Any experence/ideas welcomed!

But she wont let me cut it with sissors either? She will happily stand there and go to sleep is a brush it with a plastic curry comb but anything else is a no no. As soon as i stop brushing and just rest my hand on her mane she is start freaking out.

How should i over come this then?

I don't think a Microchip would make her sore or sensitive in her neck now, as she was microchipped quite a while ago!

It could be a memory thing I suppose if she had a bad experience of being microchipped.

To be honest, I wouldn't consider pulling a 15 month old's mane or doing anything to it- are you taking her to a show or something? if you are, and it really does need a tidy up then I'd probably use scissors if I really had to.

If when she's older you start pulling her mane and she doesn't like it then could you either twitch and give her a little bit of Sedalin or get the Vet to sedate her if she's really bad as it's not worth the risk if an injury!. If you make the pulling as quick as possible she probably won't be able to feel it, or theres always Solocomb's...

Good luck.

I didnt think that the chip would still be sore now but she may have had a bad expernece thats all.

The reason i wanted to pull her mane is because i want to show her next year and she will need to be plaited. Her mane is very thick and long atm, i didnt want to have a massive job of doing it next year when it will be even longer and a bigger job. Im not in any rush to do it but she just seems to be getting worse with having her mane played with, like she wont let me cut it with sissors now. If i could see her improving about having it plaited and cut then i would leave pulling it untill next year as she might have improved enough by then to not mind having it done.

As soon as any slight pressure is exerted on her mane she freaks, i dont no how i can build up to pulling it as she wont even let me rest my hand on her mane, as soon as my hand is there she freaks out about it. I have tryed distracting her with food, someone else holding her. The next step with be having to twitch her and i will then just pull it, i will probly wait untill next summer to do that now tho.

K27, she wont let me cut it either. and i dont really want to persis with cutting it while shes throwing herself about and im holding sicssors :/

Mines exactly the same.... as soon as he even sees the scissors he starts puttin his head to the side so I cant touch his mane lol.... he hates it even when you try and brush mud out of his mane! Have you tried twitching her? Apparently there is a a cream that numbs the neck (you can get it from chemists) but I cant think for love nor money what the name is! I feel your pain :( let me know if you come up with a solution!

Thanks Caz. Yes i was going to try the cream, i think its called Clove Oil? I guess im always going to have a problem now then. I will just have to resort to twitching her as i cant see a safe way to progress with this, if she wont tolerate my hand just rest on her mane then i havnt got anything to build on.

The horse in your sig looks lovely btw :)
