Few of us are getting together to get our horses microchipped. I know how it works re how they do it, but how is it registered? Does the vet submit a form to the microchipping company?? Where is the data held? Are all horses scanned at sales, vettings etc? i assume the vet will enter the details on the horse's passport or does it have to be sent off for amendment?

I could phone vet to ask but I am sure you lovely people will give me a quicker answer!
Have heard good and bad about it and freeze marking, chips can move, freeze marks can be altered, but surely anything we can do to identify our horses is better than nothing especially in light of the Amersham case and we are not too far from there!

vet sticks a rather large needle in horseys neck... bit of a problem if they dont like needles like mine.

Vet fills in a sheet with all your details in and posts it to company. When they have put it on their database they send you confirmation.

Not sure about sales but horses should be scanned for a microchip when they are vetted.

Vet registers it with compny, you send off passport with ID number to be updated.

At least that's what I did some years bck.

Vetting defo! and unlike freezemarks they are unique for life with no extra yearly fee. You also can update your horses details online with the microchip company. Exactly the same as small animals!

I brought a horse over a yr ago now, vet did not scan mine at the vetting, She also had a passport with nothing about a microchip number!, so once i brought her i had her freezed marked, anyhow jabs were due again this year so i asked the vet "just to scan her over" just to see! and Bingo!! she had been Mircochipped. Got the number and phoned Petlodge..but nothing.. (Petlodge did state that YOU the owner must register the horse, & not everyone does!!) they also searched their Euro Database and nothing still, so i asked them where else could i searched for her Microchip number, Petlodge said that the only Micro chipping number that they don't keep on their Database is in France! so they gave me the telephone number to Pet track who put me in touch with France, and They had her registered, They were kind enough to send me all papers for her, Birth, History, shire number ect ect, Then i phoned back Petlodge and paid £15 to Register her with me. I wish the vet DID scan her on the vetting, as i could have found out all this info before hand.

When I bought my old mare her passport said she had a chip, but it was dead. She had previously been owned by a vet and was grey so got one quite early I think. Not sure if they are better now and last longer. They were originally done for cats and dogs that don't live as long
