What does everyone think of the two alternatives? I have one freeze marked but one with nothing and can't deside which to go for with him?

I have one with both (someone may want to steal her) and one with microchip (would like to see a starnger get anywhere near her).

I would do both, freezemark as visable, microchip as these are scanned for on vetting so if horse did get sold on to someone who had a full vetting then they would flag this up and hopefully contact you.

I had Bella chipped yesterday :)

I do intend to have her freeze marked in the future too down her shoulder so its visible when we are out and about. Daughter had her gelding chipped at the same time but as he is slowly greying out she is undecided about the freeze mark. At least this way there is a chance that if the worst happened she would stand a chance of getting him back

I always think about it from my own point of view, would I prefer someone to burn me until I scarred for life or to get a quick injection? Hmmm...let me think?!

Or would I want to be taken away in the middle of the night to god knows where, by god knows who and sold on /starved/ beaten etc etc - of course there is the chance I might end up in a nice home, but if Im already in one, why would I want that?

Having had both done on different animals, the reaction to the freezemark was less than the chip .
Poor lad with the chip had a massive lump and not an insignificant amount of blood ..... have you seen the size of the chip/needle???
The mare who was freezemarked stood like a good 'un and the mark was never hot to the touch or appeared to cause her any discomfort.

If its a mare. a coloured or a minature, do BOTH. They are the favoured targets for thieves.

Otherwise, freezemark.

Freezemarking caused no visible reaction whatsoever in either of my horses, maybe cos they did use gel which numbs the skin first. Neither did microchipping my mare.

Out of the 5 horses we had chipped yesterday only 1 bled at all and only for a minute or two so it appears to be pot luck on that. Can't comment on any lumps as I've not seen madam today yet

Nice to know that the mare stood nicely for the freeze marking :) There's hope for when Bella is done :p :D

I have some of each, my old boy is freeze branded and the TB and NF is chipped.

I wouldn't get the TB freeze branded as she is dark bay and i'd rather not have a white set of numbers on her, I understand the reasons for this but it looks really unsightly. :o

On a coloured i'd have it done as it's just another bit of white and it identifies the horse without standing out too much.

Welsh A is grey so kind of pointless branding him.

Thanks for all the replies. Well as the vet is coming to do booster this afternoon i am going to get him microchipped anyway and will have a think about the freeze marking. I always thought freeze marking was the best personally really but thought i'd see the views on the microchipping as it's relitivley new! I had my sec d done on the shoulder (about 10 years ago) as there were lots of stories about horses being sold at sales with saddle on to hide them but i think things like that are to a minimum these days as things have changed a little, but then again he is a shire so doing it under saddle all the way up there might be a little awkward anyway! Sec D didn't like i too much but no harm done, he was really young too and very bolshy at the time!

I do both on all my horses, I would prefer them to have a few days of soreness than be stolen and never know what discomfort they may have with god knows who has them.
