Hi all, not sure if this is in the right place but here goes anyway!

I'm thinking about getting my boy microchipped, predominantly because there's been quite a few security scares in our area recently. Now my 5 year old already had his done, but Caff is 14 so didn't get it done when he was a foal. We had him freezemarked when we bought him but as he's grey it never really took and now only shows when he's clipped and/or wet!

Can anybody point me in the right direction of who I contact to arrange this? Costs etc? Has anybody had in done and how did their ponies take it?!

Just ask your vet, they should do it for you no problem. Mine was done when he was weaned and he didn't really notice! I think it cost £15 at the time (a few years ago now).

It was the vet that did mine, It is more now, around £20, it the call out fee thats the killer £56.00 for me, luckily there was three of us so we split the call out.

The microchip is injected by a gun, its over so quickly that there is not much to react to! we had in all 15 done that day and only one of them jumped around.

Only vets can chip horses.

It is done with a plastic trigger or gun chaped device which pushes the needle into the skin & muscle.

You can see a little dot towards the bottom left of clipped area which is where it was planted

My horse is already freezmarked and I have been considering micrchipping too, but I think you have to get farmkey or someone out to do the hores shoe mark if it is going to have any really deterent? Haven't read enough about it yet, but the more we can do to deter thieves the better I say

I have all of mine chipped and just had my two little foals done yesterday. I've always felt so much better with the traceability of a chip. My two little foals took it really well.

On the downside I have a post in the stolen/missing section headed Ben - Standardbred. I bought him last Thursday. The people I bought him from are saying they mislaid the passport and to my dismay I asked my Vet to scan him yesterday and he has two chips implanted! I'm now going round in circles trying to find out who this horse is. Not even DEFRA are being very helpful right now!

No-one is going to like this story but a hairdresser friend I was talking to today swears her friend was in a restaurant in Spain last year and spat a microchip out of the main course! Yurk!
