Thoughts of giving a 7 month old a very small amount of micronised linseed with her evening feed? (50-60g approx).
Wanting to improve overall dry skin (flaky-irritated on her belly etc by flies) and she could do with putting some condition on.
Don't want her putting on too much weight but she could afford to definitely put some on over the winter as she weaned at before she was 5 months (not by me) and was not put on any hard feed before i got her.
Any negatives of this to a foalie so young?
TIA! X

What about giving mare and youngstock? Or suregrow? I would start at that as a base rather than go with linseed to start with.
She is on suregrow now she gets 950g a day as her recommended is 900-1000kg and its been doing her fab - i got this off a recommendation too so very happy! just wondered if i could add the linseed to this as she seems to love a hard feed now with shaved carrots over the top :)

Oh she sounds spoiled already lol. I wouldnt feed a lot as she will be growing rapidly, it can result in a lysine deficiency. But if you wanted to feed a tiny bit along with a good feed I can see no harm.

I am definitely - first foal just making sure she lives her best life haha! Perfect thank you, i didnt know that about lysine so i might just go with a handful as dont want to cause more problems than good!

No experience with foals but if you are feeding for the skin and coat benefits rather than weight gain, you may not need that much. Forageplus suggests 42g per 220kg body weight.

Yeah the suregrow seems to be doing wonders for her atm as in 5 weeks she looks so much better - just could do with something to help her skin/coat and overall condition a bit more - might have a nosy on that website thankyou!

I've just started giving my yearling linseed oil foe just this reason. I spoke to Topspec as he's on their stud balancer and give him their recommended dose, it may be worth checking with your feed company re amount required

It didn't make him fat I just didn't want the scrawny look ?

This is me at the moment haha, shes quite scrawny looking i know people keep saying foals are meant to look like that but she definitely lacks shine, and condition ive been treating some of her skin with creams as its quite dry and affected by flies at the moment so quite irritated bless her :(
