Hi, I've been feeding A&P fast fibre with hoof kind chaff to try and help my horses feet but he's loosing weight. Should I feed micronised linseed or does linseed oil do the same job?
Thanks :)

I've been trying to find as much info on this as possible and from what i hear the micronized linseed is excellent for helping condition, coat, feet etc without making them fizzy which i believe (from reading various bits) that the oil does!

Im pretty sure the horse digests the micronised stuff better and it contains all the original fibre too so whilst they both do the same job the micronised is better.

I'm a big fan of linseed, I've never fed the oil so can't comment on it - I buy the seeds, soak them in the morning & then cook over night in the slow cooker.

My horses are shoeless, live out & always look shiny & well, so I'd recommend it.

Prefer Micronised for all the reasons above plus oil can go rancid more quickly.

You may also want to look at unmolassed sugarbeet as a more calorific but safe base feed. You are feeding an awful lot of straw in both the fast fibre (straw, unmolassed sugarbeet and grass meal) and hoof kind(straw alfalfa and fibre pellets) which is great as filler for a good doer but if your horse is losing weight may not be ideal.

I feed the fast fibre and linseed combination to my mare who is a poor doer and she has never looked better. Is there any parrticaular reason why you feed the chaff? I would be inclined to drop it I think because the two above do the job on their own.

Fast fibre has been fantastic for a f friends of mine who needed to get weight off their horses but a few people with poor doers have found it wasn't quite right for theirs.

Micronised. Pretty easy to source now. If i couldn't i would use the oil tho I couldn't be bothered with all that boiling stuff. I use micronised and it is definately my preferred choice.

My local feed place sourced this for me. It cost the same as buying it online with the delivery cost but hey ho, its not far to travel and i had the time.

Now i dont have a share horse i have a sack of it in my shed, lol

Yeah my feed merchants sourced it for me too but they only charged me the cost of the bag despite them only ordering it for me so I saved the seven odd quid postage.ANDthey delivered it to me for free so might be worth asking around.

Thanks, my feed merchant didn't have either so they are getting me some micronised linseed in for me. I want to feed some sort of chaff to fill him up, is there anything better than hoof kind to feed instead?
