My girl is 4 years of 15.2 lw cob x , she winters badly(although now she's stopped growing so much will hopefully be better :/

She's always been barefoot and copes really well , she's is currently on half a scoop of fast fibre , handful of cool mix , half scoop of hi fi lite , a scoop of fly free and two scoops of equivite (powder vit supplement ) she's doing well on this will eventually change over to pro hoof from pro earth . I've just ordered some linseed , she's always been an itchy mare , not sweet itch but scratchy none the less .

I've heard linseed to be great for their coats and feet also good for keeping weight n in winter . How much do you guys feed and does it hot them up ??

You can feed up to a cupful of Linseed for her coat. It will help make her really shiny.

The amount will have no effect on her behaviour, it's an oil feed so is slow release energy. It's a very expensive way to increase weight, you can use corn oil to increase weight. Start with a very small amount as some horses don't like the texture, gradually increase amount each day to around one cup (250ml)

I feed corn oil each winter , old to know I can feed them together , she's a good heathy weight ATM just know she CAn drop off a lot in winter so want to I crease her feed without blowing her brain

I would keep up with the linseed, drop the cool mix, and if she is going to be a bit itchy, add spirulina ( forageplus sell it) you can start feeding it around jan/feb time for the oncoming summer..
Linseed converts in the horses tum better than oil and is more palatable.
Spirulina also helps with weight ,coats, hooves and immune system

Micronised linseed is cheaper than oil, I buy 20kg for £30.00 it is available more cheaply, it is unprocessed, good for gut, skin, hooves, joints and slow release energy. Add to non mollassed s/beet and top with minerals ........ perfect diet, I add some non molassed chaff.
Feeding 200gms linseed per day [winter in work], = 1kg per 5days, so 20kg lasts 100 days, cost 30p per day, £2.10 per week.
Summer/: 50gms per day, cost is 8p.
Cut out any heating type cereal mix [eg maize], alfalfa can also cause problems.
There is a non itch wash by Gallop which I used as well.
Start feeding in September to maintain condition, aim to be on full winter ration before xmas.

Linseed is fantastic stuff, I feed 2-3 of the mini tubtrug cups a day (16.3 WB). I buy the Charnwood stuff and it is £18 a 20kg bag (shop around, some places sell it for £30 but some for much less!).

The oil in linseed has a better Omega ratio for horses than Corn oil and most other oils - while we don't know for sure what the optimum ratio for horses is, this is based on the assumption that you want it as close as possible to that in spring grass. The wrong ratio can apparently be inflammatory.
