midges are out

The most fierce is the black one with DEET, but I tend to prefer something less powerful on sensitive parts, and use DEET only on mane and tail so less goes on the skin.
 
Power Phaser by Leovet is the only one I've found any good.

The rest are as useless as knats-p!ss IME.

Or you can make your own, much cheaper and just as effective.

My rough version consists of a mixture of cider vinegar, few squirts of Avon Skin-so-Soft (blue marked carton), about a capful of Dettol, cold black tea, a capful of Neem oil and a squirt of handwash creme to stop it emulysifying. Instead of the Neem you could add Tea Tree and/or Citronella or Lavendar.

This is cheap and cheerful and you can afford to be generous with it!
