midges in ears

Zak gets about 10 midges in each ear when they are not protected, and they bite him and it is obviously uncomforatble-he shakes his head to get them out. I have a full fly mask with ears for him, but I dont exactly want to wear one of these when im riding, is there any cream etc I can put that will stop them?

DEET made by NAf very good to keep midges off just soak pad of cotton wool and wipe in and around ears. Fly away used to make MIDGE AWAY very good both expensive though. Or just one of those Fly fringes with ears like people into showjumping seem to use. you know they've got a sort of crochet look to them! not the most attractive but would do the job or any sort barrier cream although i find they are so thick that when you are applying them they stick the protective hair around the ears together so horse has lost some of its natural protection.

My vet gave me benzyl benzoate for the same thing. My poor horse gets so upset by them in his ears. But eh diosnt help when he keeps taking his fly masks off!

radiol fly repellent cream- i swear by it because even when i don't put it in and they get bitten when i put it in it cools it and keeps the flies away totally. also put it on the inside of the back legs. brilliant and quite cheap too!

I'm having the same problem with Oscar now that the midges are coming out - he gets really annoyed by them! I'm getting him a fly/ear mask for riding I think!

The Net-tex equine summer fly cream is good - no bright yellow stains & it isn't so solid to apply

I ride with a fly mask on. I tried it on my head first to see how much she could see and its fine. She hacks out really happily wearing it and we've never had a problem
