Have and Midlanders had any experiences with Bissell Wood? I'm going to have a look round and a chat on friday in hope that i can move my girl there as the facilities look excellent. I was just wondering what it was like to keep a horse there though, as i've learnt from past experences it doesnt matter how good the yard looks, no-where is nice if the people are unfriendly. I'm really hoping it's nice though.

You are right the facilities are first class, Daughters friend keeps pony there and says some of the adults are " a bit up themselves" make of that what you will! I know if I were nearby and looking for a livery space its where I would look!

I had a look around there i didn't like the stables they were small and on top of each other,i was told that during the summer they run pony camp and they hire your stable back and your horse has to live out for two weeks, which would not have suited me,the facilities are very good, but the school was a long way form the stable block!

Good luck hope it suits you.

We ride over near there quite regularly. I believe there are a couple of stable blocks around the land. A friend of mine went to look when our yard closed down. She thought the stables were ok but to get to the menage you had to hack through the woods - not good in the winter - and then there were no lights. Hacked past the grazing today and the horses all seemed quite happy. The XC course is generally good although you do have to watch the ground as can become a little boggy in places. They do hold a lot of competitions there during the warmer months and the XC can be hired by anyone every other Sunday for £15. Another lady I know has her horse there and is very pleased. Her horse is a TB and the grazing suits her better. Go and have a good look around and check the prices for DIY/part/full livery.

i had a look there and decided against it...
no lights on school
have to hack 10 mins to get to school through woods (no good for winter!)
stables too small
lots of weekend comps where you won't be able to use facilities.
xc course was very boggy when we looked and i wouldn't have ridden my horses on fround like that

Thanks for your replies everyone

I tend to go into things with a bit of an idealistic view sometimes and other peoples practical opinions really do help! I'm going to have a look around on friday but you've give me some things to consider i wlouldn't have thought of myself. Thank youuuu.

Also when we went i felt like we were been interviewed by owners,i had to sit round a table and questioned asked questions like do you work? where do you live? etc which i was not that keen on.

Good luck anyway let us know how it goes.

I used to be on a yard very close, and have been to Bissell Wood often. Facilities seem to be very good on first appearance, but you have to give up your stables when the pony club camp is on (I believe you get a small reduction on the livery), school is charged extra, there are shows pretty much every weekend during the summer, so facilities are out of bounds, some of the grazing is ridiculously steep (mnore suited to mountain goats!)......there are lots of negatives, so much so that I completely disregarded it when I was looking for a yard.

Also, the owners are....erm....a bit quirky?

I have had several friends who have liveried there, and all have left pretty sharpish! One had to re-paint her stable walls at regular intervals, cos her horse used to dirty it (he used to back into the corner of the stable for a poo!)

Plus points - XC course very inviting for a young/novice horse.

I know of a much better livery yard, within very easy hacking distance of Bissell Wood (so you can still do the shows and use the XC), which is much much cheaper. PM me for details if you're interested.

There are 2 main stable blocks, one has a manege right next to it, which is now floodlit.

I stable my mare there, and she has settled better than any other yard she's been at. I will not be moving any time soon. The other liveries are fantastic, and I have made some good friends. No bitchiness!!! Everybody gets on, and the horses are all very settled. Stables are big enough ( my mare is 16hh ) and are indoor and open plan.

Facilities are fantastic, regular fun rides/pony club comps. Cross country course can get a little boggy over winter months, but I rode over it today, and the going is spot on!

My mare has individual turnout, and the turnout is rotated ( winter fields are now being rested ). I would highly recommend.
