Bit of background if you don't already know us! My horse Jacob is knocking on 20, and I've had him for two and a half years now since being given him for free due to his somewhat undesirable bucking habit. He lives at university with me so we hardly ever go competing! He's a jack of all trades though, and now a (mostly!) angel following a solid routine and a work load to keep his mind busy.

I managed to hitch a lift with a friend to a small dressage comp a few months back, and ended up qualifying for the Midland Winter Champs in Rodbaston this weekend just gone. My boyfriend passed his HGV licence in the summer so offered to drive us - lucky me!!!

So we've worked hard between then and now, with lessons up to twice a week. Due to his age (and the fact he's not flashy in the slightest) it's very, very hard to stop him from doing a horrible choppy trot and this has been our biggest nemesis. Majority of the problems lie with me however... I don't sit straight, I have a dire lower leg and naughty motorbike hands!

Anyway, so had a respectable time of 12.45pm and we left the yard at 8 am for the three hour journey to the venue.

It was horrible fog the whole way there, but just as we arrived the sun came out in all its glory! He warmed up the best I have ever felt him. Soft in my hands, swinging over his back and best of all not getting grumpy at the horses around him!

Quick brew and we were in!

The test overall was the best he has ever done. Unfortunatly, the judges decided I didn't do my give and retake (I did!) and he broke in my last canter. He's always been a very chatty type, but I was so pleased with him, as usually he throws his head around and screams good and proper! However, he managed to contain himself and just give some pathetic girly squeals as he went along ;)

We got 69% overall and came 4th. Jacob managed to get an 8 for his paces... which probably doesn't sound that amazing, but for a horse whose trot is described as 'the grandad shuffle' it is fantastic!

Any CC is welcome! I know my faults (I think!) so any exercises to improve them are gratefully received. Jacob now believes he is far superior to any other horse on our DIY yard and the morning after escaped out of the back gate and had a mad 20 minutes in a field he shouldn't of been in. He was only caught when a feed bucket was produced and he cantered back to fill his belly - boys hey! He's so cheeky...

What a stunning boy, I really love coloureds! Sounds like you had a fab time and what a great result, you should be dead proud of you both!

As for being 20, he looks fantastic!

I think he deserved to have a good run around and congratulate himself!

Lovely photos :)

Thank you :) A new girl at my yard was so shocked when she found out as she thought he was a 5 y/o!

Yes he was congratulating himself for sure... Meanwhile I was running round like a blue ar*ed fly panicking about the road!

Well done, he looks great!!

I've just put this on a thread in NL as a rider is querying whether they should buy a 16yo, he is a great advert for oldies still going strong. Well done to you for taking him on and making something of him.

I got him at 17 and to be honest I hated him for at least the first six months I had him and only had him as I was so desperate for a horse of my own. However now, as I'm sure you can see, he was WELL worth it :)

Looking to go BE for the first time next season so well worth getting an oldie!!!

Well done you!
Great result for a 20year old, even more fantastic that your stores reflect all the hard work you have put in.

Regarding exercises, whatever my fault, I have a lunge lesson...helps all my issues anyway!

I've been told lunge lessons before, but I haven't the facility here or anywhere near. However, I'm off to a working pupil position in June so perhaps that's where the oppurtunity will arise! Thank you for your help.

ISH instead of a Warmblood any day!
Nom ;);)
Hey, I hunt a Shetland....not sound poncy hunter ;);)
If he does what you want to do, he's perfect. And it's not all looks that count....I'd rather have an ugly horse with a beautiful personality than the other way round!!
:)

Again, well done xx

Well done !
The give retake thing. When the judges aid not shown you probably did not show it for long enough or clearly enough. I see this happen quite often but the rider thinks they have done it. You need to push your hands almost half way up the horses neck for 4-5 strides ( usually canter) and the horse must not move the way it is carrying itself.

First time I've had it in a test so I guess you live and learn! To me it felt like ages but obviously not long enough!!

Lovely report, love his markings, and 8 for paces *is* amazing...!!!!

I've never been a huge fan of coloureds, but when I first met him about 10 years ago (when he belonged to somebody else) I told my Mum that one day I would have a horse just like him. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would actually have him one day!
