mikmar bits

Your 'snaffle' rein goes on the part that looks like a conventional snaffle on the bit. The second rein can go on the lower bit fitting or on the rope. The rope MUST be loose enough so that when you release the contact the rope loosens off, and must not be fouled by any part of the bit or bridle.

If you buy this bit from an approved supplier you get a fitting video with it, because it is essential that this bit is fitted correctly. If you have bought it from ebay and paid anything less that £120 for it, it is most likely a copy or very old stock.

If you pm me an address I might have a Mikmar video knocking around and would be happy to loan it to you

please be sure this is a genuine mikmar it should be stamped on the mouthpice because they are made of aircraft aluminium and are very strong. sadly some of the cheaper imitations have been known to break. if you email mikmar by the way they will be very helpful the president of the company called me himself! sorry not got the link to hand but you should find it easily enough.

i have to say that once i got past the look of them i quite liked the idea and much prefered the result to myler and going back to the companies concerned (i was writing an article for Horse) Mikmar couldnt have been nicer or more helpful where myler leant on horse to remove the part it didnt care for. That sort of says it all for me.

lucretia, I used to be involved in selling them so am passionate about ensuring that genuine bits are purchased and correctly fitted. My experiences with Mikmar in the US have all been positive - these bits aren't for everybody, but as you say, once you get over the odd appearance they are very effective

Like everything else, if used properly for their intended purpose they can be just the ticket so long as they aren't thought a cure all or for every situation. As mentioned, because of the way they look many people made assumptions about them but by and large they seemed very effective and relatively humane when used properly. One issue was selection and individual fitting - because they are so expensive people tended to want one size/style to fit all but that's hardly the fault of the bit maker!

They were absolutely the "hot thing" in North America and ended up being one of those bits everyone with any sort of problem put on their horse. The "good" part of their moment in the sun was that everyone got a crash course in what they AREN'T suitable for and what sort of problems might crop up from using then incorrectly. (EVERYTHING which has an effect has the potential to cause a negative effect.) Great to learn from other people's mistakes!

well i used it on him today and he seemed to like it.
it took a few minutes and i could feel him really playing with the roller in it but within 20 mins he was fine.
he was really light to ride in it - i wasnt sure if i liked it or not! he didnt seem like my horse!

i jumped him in it too - he was a lot nicer to ride to the fence as before he used to throw his head up and try and charge off with me - not good when competing at 1.20 +

i am happy with it!

just wonder how long before he learns a way of evading this one!
