I have a mini Shetland that is not great with the vet and needs to be sedated for her dental check up.

She is checked every six months and for both visits last year, around 7-10 days after each check up, she developed a mild case of colic, which required minor treatment.

It seems too much of a coincidence not to be related to the sedation / dental work.

I’m dreading her next check up, I will be checking with my vet to see if there is anything we can do to try to prevent another colic episode, but has anyone come across anything like this before?

I would have expected any minor spasmodic colic from sedation to occur sooner than 7-10 days afterwards 🤔. Do mention it to your vet and see what they suggest.

How zonked out is she by the sedation?

My wonky mare has had minor colics when sedated for joint medications has been coupled with the 48 hours box rest needed post the joint medications, but is grand even when she had to be sedated for nearly 2 hours at a time for major dental procedures, but was then turned straight out afterwards.

Does she have dental issues?

She doesn’t seem particularly zonked out at the time, both times she just needed rasping. For the March visit she was in overnight, but was turned out after for the October visit. It does seem a little bit too long after, but it’s just strange it has happened twice.
