got down in the pouring rain this morning to find Dex led down in field shelter which he never normally does - he got up but looked a bit subdued - tried to give them a handful of haylage each as they are on very minimal grazing as hay field still not cut and he turned his nose up at it ! this is a horse that is uber greedy. he then stretched pawed with a front foot and did a couple of kicks with back leg and led back down - cue vet call - spoke to vet and she was great said she could either come now or if I was happy to watch him I could give it half an hour or so to see if any improvement. Asked if walking in hand would help and she said yes if he was happy to do it, left him led down until he got up on own then walked him round for 5 mins which he was happy to do. After 5 mins he seemed a bit better so left him shut on yard with no food - went off for 10 min walk with dog - came back and much brighter - rang vet and we agreed to leave him in for an hour (I had to go off to do a couple of chores) and then on return if looked ok to let him out on the restricted grazing.
So, the upshot is - he is fine - back out grazing happily and looking like nothing has happened - in this instance waiting and watching for an hour has saved me £200 vet bill ! and has saved dex being jabbed and examined in a personal way !.
She said it was probably down to the fact that I have been letting them on the edge of the hay field - they went on there yesterday on a bare patch with a 10ft by 1ft bit of grass which she says is soo high in sugars could easily upset tummy !
Just thought I would post as she said there are alot of cases of this at the moment ! seems we cant win - I have one field in desperate need of rest and no grass (they are living off hedgerow and nettles) and one with tons of grass waiting to be cut for hay which cant be used !
