My ex racer came in from the field today slightly lame 1/10 at the most on his right hind. No obvious injuries swelling or heat anywhere, I had a good test of his foot, no reaction. He is lifting it up more than the other foot when he walks which is strange, and he had sweated a lot just on that side under his fly rug. He had a day off yesterday and only went for a short hack on tuesday.

I gave him some electrolytes in his feed and popped him out in our small paddock, was wondering if anyone else has experianced anythign similar to this? hopefully he has just a mild bruise or twist or something.

Any help or ideas would be great!
Thankyou

Hi. I'm no vet but doesn't sound like tying up to me. I would think more a bruise or strain - a few days rest should sort. A pony at my yard tied up severly but her whole back end clamped and she could hardly walk. Also, tying up is caused by feeding concentrates when the horse isn't being worked, and then working again and everything builds up (I'm no good at explaining! :-P) so I really doubt he'd have tied up in the field - hope that helps a little bit! :)

Just a possibility - check up under and around his sheath area and inside of his legs for fly bites and stings - you'l have to get underneath him to have a good look.

My lad was lame a few years back - vet came and went saying it was a stifle thing - I had a look underneath on a whim and found huge golf ball size puritic swellings all down his sheath - poor guy was walking like John Wayne!
