Mild OCD in yearling, will it heal with boxrest and no surgery??

My yearling has been diagnosed with primary stages of OCD in both stifles. He is 100% sound and my vet wants to do 4 months box rest ( we are 3 weeks in to it ). He said him losing weight (hes on restricted diet) and no exercise will allow the joint to heal naturally and there is no need for surgery yet.

My question is has anyone had success with OCD healing on box rest?
