So on Thursday of last week (June 11) my horse pulled back when tied and broke a wooden post. He then ran off with the post. When we were finally able to catch him, the only injury he had was a cut on his left hind, on the fetlock. It wasn't deep, but it was big. About 2 inches in diameter. We trotted him out, a vet just happened to be there so she looked at him, and he was fine. We wrapped the cut with a gauze pad + vet wrap then put on a standing wrap. I did the same thing for 3 days. When I took off the wraps, his leg wasn't swollen at all. I stopped wrapping because it was over 90 degrees F here and his leg would overheat with a standing wrap. But the next day, it had an even swelling from the hock down to the fetlock. Mild swelling, basically the grooves between the bones and tendon are filled in, so the tendon on that leg isn't clearly defined like it usually is. He still has the swelling today. He is 100% sound and it doesn't hurt him for me to palpate it. After he is worked, the swelling goes down all the way. He has been w/t/c on the ground and under saddle, and there is no lameness at all. I'm a major worrier and can only think of the worst. Any idea on what this could be? Is it possible for the cut to still be causing his leg to swell?
