Well it’s your fault lol, you told me about it ?

This was her second attempt (the first time she was distracted by someone walking past so had to bark loudly at them ?) - she had been shut in the kitchen so didn’t know where the treats were.

my garden is too small lol, and I’m thinking the boxes are too close together - I’ve messaged my trainer for her feedback ?

That was good!

Looks like excellent fun. How does one learn to do teach scent training?

I looked online at scentworkuk.com - they list trainers across the country and I chose a couple near me and had a look at their websites? The lady I go to also does other activities so I thought if Millie doesn’t suit scent work we could swap to something else - it’s £10 for 1/2 an hour and £20 for an hour, one to one tuition at the moment because of COVID-19

I think I would like to try this! Sadly my fell hound is probably too old to want to traipse off to lessons (and she is very nervous in the car) but would be a natural. :) I would be interested to see what the terrierist said about it. Perhaps I could train him to be a truffle hunting dog....?! :)

I must admit I’m quite tempted to take George next time - it might tire him out and stop him barking ?

My trainer said “Brill great start, she is working independently which is what we want ? the spacing is good, try putting less treats out now, maybe only 2”

That’s a huge relief, i was feeling a bit down after some comments on here (I’m sorry, that’s ABSOLUTELY more about me at the moment than anyone who gave feedback I totally assure you, and I am not complaining in ANY way!!) so I’ll carry on and see what happens ?

I think it’s really interesting. I hide dummies in the garden for the dogs to find, same principle, you gradually make it harder. It totally wears them out!

Yep I think the issue for Millie will not be asking her to find things, I think it will be keeping her steady to the find when she makes it and ensuring she stays in one place? But I’ve had some tips from the trainer (bearing in mind this is week one!!!) on how I can best introduce that idea ?

I will totally admit (as you’ve probably realised lol!) that I’m already fascinated by this - if I can take things steadily and Millie is as good as I hope she might be, I can see entering some competitions in the future!

But it’s very very early days, so who knows - for now it’s fun, it makes her tired and that is 100% mission accomplished ??

I tried scent work with my big boy. He picked it up really quickly, the seeking and marking but due to his appalling work ethic point blank refused to search more than twice at a time. Unfortunately the searches were in sets of three...he'd do two and when sent on the third would sit down and have a scratch or lick his arse! We didn't go back after the beginners class. He was the same with a ball - I'd throw it, he'd bring it back the first and second time. The third time I threw it, I'd get the look that said 'You threw it luv, you go and get it' :) while he went off on something else.

I've had a brainwave! Millie's perfect career...deer stalkers need scent dogs that can follow the blood trail to find injured deer, either from shooting or car accidents...what do you think? Possibly Mo Farah would need to be on the end of the lead? :D

She would love it ? but she’d definitely need Mo Farah! I think I posted at the time about the canicross race I did a year or so ago when she slipped her collar and shot past all the other racers (with and without dogs) - I had strangers coming up to me for the rest of the day saying in awed tones ‘she’s very fast isn’t she’ ???

This looks great fun. I have been doing scent training with my GBGV puppy. Our trainer has us hiding a treat under things and the dog finding and pointing to it but not eating the treat. He gets a different treat for finding it. It's hard work with a greedy member of the basset family, with a supercharged nose and permanently hungry tummy. I think he would find this easier!

Wow that sounds super difficult DC! I naughtily progressed to the next stage with Millie last night in our home practice (not sure whether I will confess to my trainer on Friday!) where she was looking for the pot which had the scent of cloves in it rather than simply sniffing out a treat? She got that first time too, precocious little madam :D but I'm guessing that's more like your trainer is aiming for? She looks for one thing but get another - but without the temptation of a treat for her to eat when she finds what she is looking for, which must be nearly impossible
