I currently have an elderly miniature poodle. And I'm starting to think about what to get next. Has anyone had a wheaten and a poodle? Are the wheatens really terrier-like (opinionated, yappy ;) ? How do they compare temperament-wise with poodles? Are their coats easier or harder to deal with? How much do wheatens shed?

I was warned off wheatens as was concerned about the 'terrier traits' and that would be difficult for me as I need a dog that can run loose as much as possible!
How about a Spanish water dog?

I seriously considered one for a while but for one reason or another I had something else. I know one now a few years later and she is a lovely little dog, very friendly, sweet BUT I'm always relieved that I didn't have one, I really do like her but she does have that terrier streak, that bit of stubbornness, the nose hitting the floor and running off hunting, that type of thing. However, this is only one and there is of course variety within the breed but personally I'd probably be going for a poodle again.

If you are thinking along those lines........ how about a bedlington. the calmest terriers ever, with a very laid back temprament. Yes the coat needs grooming, but you can choose to trim or leave. and they dont shed so easy to care for. A little smaller than a wheaten and so so mild mannered.

Thank you. I knew I could get a good range of views on here. My brother has a wheat but no horses so I knew he wouldn't be offended by my posting on here! His dog is lovely and affectionate, but I think I do want to go with what I know. My poodle is probably the best dog I'll ever have, so people orientated and fun and clever and really good at knowing who is feeling a bit low and needs love or entertainment. He's amazing. He is an excellent mouser or ratter when asked too (funny how so many people are
shocked by this!). My only ONLY regret is that where he is black it is hard to get good photos of him so next one might have to be apricot!

Yes, poodles can be fantastic ratters - mine has never caught one, but I've observed his skills in killing his toys with a ferocious shake that I'm sure no mouse or rat would stand a chance. :D

The apricot/red/brown ones have a more nervous disposition to the blacks. It's not just me that thinks that, but a long time poodle breeder had told me that and I've since found it to be true. I know what you mean about the black ones being impossible to photograph. Mine is just a black blob on any photos we take. In fact, he's difficult to see at all sometimes. We have a room with "Persian" type rug in black and red that he loves to lay on - and you can't see him at all on it...unless you squint and really look for him.
