my 2 yr old mini filly has a problem with both stifles locking, usually first thing and improves once turned out.cant stay out 24 hrs due to recent state of the fields and my big ones come in.vet has seen her and thought shed grow out of it but today is the first time she hasnt come right so thinking its getting worse.we walk her out in hand, shes not overweight but still a baby so not mature.field has been boggy but drying out and she has a tiny amount of glucosamine.any thoughts other than get vet out which i will do if no improvement,as they mentioned surgery as worse case.

Sorry to hear about your filly, I really hope she grows out of it.

Shadow had the same issue and he was 6 when he had the operation on both legs and we have not had any other issues since. Unfortunately he never grew out of it.

Unfortunately I can not recommend any treatment, as even with exercise Shadow would still randomly lock up.

Fingers crossed for you as it distressing to see it

Doughnut had this problem and never grew out of it. He had both tendons cut last April and was about £2100 in total at Liphook Equine Hospital.

He was a different pony after he had it done as he got to the point where he was scared to move as he know he would lock up!

Nothing helped him other than surgery

My vet told me that minis are very prone to locking stifles. My own mini, Charlie, had the operation before I bought him. I did own a cob with locking stifles - to unlock them, we used to push her backwards and turn her at the same time and they used to click back into place. When she was sold, she was then backed and now in work and fitter, the new owners haven't had any problems.

My 2 year old section A had the same problem and I was told it was common in a lot of small ponies and a lot will grow out of it,he is now 3 and it hardly ever happens now,in fact cant remember when the last time was so it is possible x

Plenty of excersise and backing up excersizes too,it will most likely grow out of it.I've had 2 mules with it and they did in a few years

Can you turn out on a hill, friend had a yearling mini Shetland had the same problem vet recommended turning out on a hill to build up muscle it did the trick. Maybe if you cant turn out on a hill how about walking up hills might help.
