A rare one from me! Not often I get out and about!

My local HT course recently added a mini course and advertised a mini hunter trial for under twelves during half term. This prompted someone (not me, I hasten to add!) to post on our local horsey FB group a plea for mini HT's to be open to adults too as there are many of us namby pamby nervous nellies and some with baby horses who would love a chance to do something like this too. Loads of people commented agreement so the sec of said event kindly offered to add a couple of classes for over 12's if there was enough interest. Ideal for me and the little pone, I thought, so I entered!

It was all of *whispers* 1'9" but I am rather rusty, what with my old boy not being sound enough for more than plodding about and my new TB not being ready for any outings yet. Little pone is experienced, though, but the children are still on the lead rein and I don't want her to become reliant on this so think it's a good idea for me to do things with her too (we did a little show jumping class and the open gymkhana section at the pony club show a couple of weeks ago, had a second in the musical sacks and won the ride and run  )

Things didn't start well, however, I fell off before I'd even started! I had just got on and was tightening my girth when little pone decided to snatch her head down for grass in the way that ponies do. With one hand on the reins and one leg in the air she easily pulled me to the point of no return and I slid swiftly down her neck! Much swearing and cursing followed.

She warmed up nicely and was quite keen and I managed to set off from the start without too much leg wobbling. The time section included a double of knock-downs which she cleared, but not feeling the urge to be competitive we trotted through most of it. We had a nice confidence giving round and went off back to the box all smiles and big pats and shouts of 'well done Mummy!' :)

Some pics :-

After we'd had our picnic and put little pone safely back in the box we went off to get ice creams (very nice fancy ice cream too) and take my number back. Though I might get a rosette as there weren't many entries but couldn't believe it when they told me we'd won! SO I have a nice pretty frilly that I didn't win in a gymkhana for a change!

Anyway, as little pone had been such a good girl (apart from the earlier grass incident  ) I let her have an hour or two in the treat paddock (as opposed to the usual confines of the fat paddock) while I poo picked and sorted out.

So we all had a nice day :) Thanks for reading if you got this far  x

Lovely report, gorgeous pony and super pictures :)

Whoop, whoop for the frilly, but shame on you for gatecrashing the under twelves so that they ran an extra section :D:D

Nice of them to run an adult version, I think people are realising there is plenty of interest from the ahem more mature rider. Well done. Always good to have a nice positive experience in the bank and any rosette is a good rosette!

Well done, sounds like a great day out. I would be up for that type of class, I'm an adult on a pony who does mainly dressage so only has a dressage saddle but we love bouncing round some mini xc. There's a local xc course near us but their adult novice class is 70cm which is far to big for me and pony to be comfortable and just have fun on:( . A riding club near us runs "xc for chickens" clinics which seem to be popular, we've signed up for our first one in a couple of weeks, it's billed as dinky fences, lots of fun and no pressure. :)

Aww, thanks all.

She is a lovely pony, quite handy and with a fair bit about her, I would have given my right arm for a pony like her when I was 12.

LOL 'XC for chickens', love it, Walrus!

Well done you :) I think you must be near me geographically. I too was delighted when the venue bent to pressure - unfortunately my four year old is not ready (by a long way) for such a thing. So glad that they have set a precedent though by extending that class to us less confident grown-ups!

Haha XC for chickens is def the way forward !

Yep, we have money to spend so venues should make the most of it!

You should go when you can, there's a new lady running it and she's lovely.

Love the fact you fell off in a child falling off kind of way from your child's pony before you even started. That's exactly what my child does :). She looks a lovely type well done.

Marmalade76, we were in the same class as you! We came 6th. Leaving home small pony required lots of PC kicking, several refusals and circles and quite a bit of 'sideways cantering because I hate leaving home alone-ness'. As soon as we turned the corner before the tyres she clicked into Perfect PC Pony Mode and cantered home with her ears pricked. My friend (another adult on a pony) came 2nd, a good team outing! We ended up knocking down one of the blinking tiny knockdown fences as she was spooking at the bloody straw bale.

It was fantastic, I did the 2ft pairs last month but with a small nappy pony I couldn't see us getting round the big course in canter! The short course was perfect, really good with lots of mega inviting jumps and just the right distance for her Royal Nappiness.

I've entered the Eventer Challenge on the 13th too, after we flew round the clear round I figure that starting her off over some show jumps might get her blood up enough to realise that XC is just show jumping in a bigger field, she's so busy napping she forgets she's jumping!

Yay, two comp reports in one! Well done to you and your friend and I'm sorry I beat her, I really didn't intend or expect to win. Lovely pic, but I do think there were nicer looking fences she could have snapped at. I can't go on the 13th 'cause my daughter has something on, good luck!

Yes, it was funny! Ponies do make a fool of you in a way that horses don't, they like to remind you now and again that at the end of the day they're the ones who are really in charge!
