So I'm trying to attempt to tidy up the mini (who should be an American Miniature) who is overweight and has a mane that goes in every direction.

I've started on the diet - he's on a bare paddock, with small feeds.

Now onto the dreaded mane! Sorry they are not the best photos as were snap shots from a video and they may also be huge.

So where do I start??

I would like to eventually get a sleek long mane... but that's me being hopeful.

LOL what a sweety - he looks like sideshow bob in the second picture - Main rake ??? or hog ! I dare you ...:D

What a sweetie!
I used thining scissors on Harry's mane and lots of combing to get it to stay on one side, much better now

As a miniature he should have a long bridle path cut from behind his ears about 6 inches long. Half the problem solved!

I have known people to extend the clip and clip half the mane off from the underside of the mane as this helps lay the top hairs. Be aware that if you go this route you will have to keep it up because it look awful for a long time growing out.

My miniature came with a mane in all directions (I could post pics if you want) and it took me 2 to 3 years to get it to lay properly, even now I regularly lay it down with hair gel.

WOW - that is fantastic !!!! Get some Silky Mane on that, a bit of gel, and they'll be no stopping it - honestly that is soooooooooooo fab !!! :D

Noooo! Do not do the 'proper' bridle path-half-way-down-neck thing, it looks ridiculous!

(Unless you plan to show of course, in which case...)

If you want to thin then by all means get one of the various thinning snipping things (solocomb etc). But pony (sorry, 'mini horse') looks fine without!

Just showed hubs and he says the first pony looks like Liamhl (sp) as mentioned above, and the second looks like he's in Flock of Seagulls !!!

Excellent stuff - I wouldn't change a thing :D

If you have time to sort it, I would start by pulling it and banding it over then as it grows in just trim so its grows in the correct and same length. Since the first 'major' of pull of my girl I now just tidy her mane every 6 weeks so it shouldnt take you long to get it all back! He is cute as a button tho!
