ive been looking through ads for months now and going to see stuff, but what im so tired of is the sheer quantity of ads with POA...
its just putting me off now because i seem to have to ring for almost EVERY ad. and im starting to feel like a call centre bod...

i think im going to give up looking for a new horse for a while

POA seems to mean "more than £15k, but we're embarrassed to say how much more" i think.
or "we want to see how keen you sound, and pitch the price accordingly."

tell me about it. i'm looking too, and it's driving me nuts!

Sometimes worth a ring!

rang a load and some have been cheap, some reasonable, some outrageous.
i understand why people put POA to an extent, it just makes a hard job even harder...

I still don't see why people don't like it. It's a matter of privacy to some of us, and I can generally gauge how much a horse will be from its description. As well as that I suppose over here I think they're more common. But anyway. Good luck with your search!

I think people don't like it because most of us have a certain budget and to phone up and ask "how much" before anything else seems so business like and cold. I always think the vendors must think I am a uncaring owner if I start with "how much". Trouble is, don't want to waste someones time on a long chat about horsey and then find I can't afford it.

It puts me off straight away, I would never bother to call. If you advertise a horse then the price is one of the things people want to know first.
I wonder, if a price is quoted as POA, does this mean it may not be fixed and is negotiable?

thats what i mean, i have a list of things im looking for and one of them is whether i can afford the horse. idealy id like to be able to create a shortlist of suitable horses to ring about, but there are just so many poa's to cost, ive probably paid BT the cost of a small pony in phone calls already

i understand the point about privacy, but if i were buying, for example, a car, i wouldnt expect to have to ring to ask the price

absolutely. i don't want to waste their time for 20 minutes, get really keen, and then be told it's waay over my price bracket anyway.
i don't think it's always easy to guess the price from the pic, experience, size, age etc. there's two 5 yr old coloured geldings on horsequest, both potential eventers, done very little. one's £6,250 and the other's £12k, iirc.

I completely agree with you!

Yeah POA isn't so bad, it's all the POIs that we get over here that I really don't like. I mean, I am not going to drive 100 miles to see a horse without even having a vague idea of what the price is, and I do get fed up with all the "Ah sure, you come and see it and tell me what you think"s that I get. I've one for sale at the moment, and we've put the price in the ad, and we keep getting people ringing up and asking all about her and then saying, "well you won't get that much for she's only a pony" - at which point we say, well if you saw her and tried her you'd know she's worth every penny!

Oh and for anyone who doesn't know, POI is price on inspection.

It does put me off calling. I have done though, and despite my months of ad scanning, and thinking I had a rough idea of prices on the market, my estimates of what they would be tended to be way out - as in about 50% greater!

Yes, I have phoned a few POA and have had to try to keep my voice level as I say 'oh i am sorry, thats a little out of my price range', you then come of the phone feeling like an idiot for having to ask and for price being an issue.

well i bought a POA pony for less then 2k. His owner didnt want absolute numptys phoning up because he was cheap as he isnt the easiest pony in the world. His was only going to be sold to the right home and at a price they could afford.

Imagine if you were selling a car and put POA. No-one would bother with it.

To me, if a seller can't be upfront about the price they want for a horse, what else aren't they going to be upfront about? Would never ring a POA ad.
