Hi can anyone recommend treatment procedures for a 10 month old mini Shetland developing club foot ? I’m getting conflicting views from farriers and vets very confused please help , is it advisable to strengthen the toe ?

How many have you got involved??
Usually your vet and farrier will work together from birth of foal going from detailed xrays, as this is usually a birth defect, not something that develops in later months. If it is developing, its more likely from a shoulder or upper leg issue.
If your vet is not forthcoming, then you need a 2nd opinion, probably from one of the bigger clinics.

Was he born with it or has it developed over time? Either way, the farrier is going to need to keep the heel low to help stretch the tendon and watch what the foal is getting to eat so they are not being "forced" to grow faster than their body is actually meant to.

I had one like that, treated within weeks of birth, farrier attention every 2 weeks, kept on hard standing and I had to do physio daily for a long time. The hard work paid off thankfully. The advice I was given was that it needed rectification instantly and any delay would lessen the chance of a normal foot developing.

Hi thanx for yr reply .He did have a growth spurt but now seems to have stopped. The vet and farrier are in agreement about the toe strengthening, which was done the other day and the heal taken down , it already looks as though it’s stretching the tendon.Do you have any feed recommendations or just let him graze ?

i would just let him graze for now, but not on good lush grass. Top up with some hay if you think he needs it. How old is he? Is he still on the dam?

He doesn't happen to have dwarfism does he? There are a couple at munchkins with dwarfism and a club foot...
