I think they are just a cross between a british spotted and a shetland....but I've no idea what kind of temperament BSPs are supposed to have

Depends on the breeding. They could be miniature horse or Falabella but they are different to a shetland. I have miniature horses but not spotted ones

British Spotted Ponies tend to be more native type, like shetlands. A friend had a 3 year old filly that she'd had since weaning that she very recently sold. They're supposed to be quite docile, there is a BSPS website if you google it.
Either way they're pretty hardy.
