Hubby and I are moving out of our flat in a month to our new house (yey

We will have a nice size garden and we're in a semi-rural location so walks every day etc. We've been doing research into dogs that are

A) non-moulting
B) medium/small
C) hour or so walk a day (and lots of time running around at yard)
D) sociable with other dogs
E) has to be very good with children and tolerant
F) Can handle being left alone for a couple of hours

My hubby is set on a Schnauzers but I have little experience of them so any feedback is very appreciated.

I would also appreciate any other breed suggestions.

Thanks

I have a mini! (Although she's a heiffer) She's called Tess aka The Beast! She is stubborn, but very loveable good, with other dogs, however she was never brought up with children and can be wary but what dog isn't? Although she loves my cousins who are 5 and 8. Costs £25 to get her clipped about every 8 weeks. They need their ears kept in good condition due to the amount of hair as it can irritate. Coat requires daily grooming also. She is more than happy to be left alone during the day but doesn't like being left at night.

Also be wary of very small mini. If you read the breed standard given by the Kennel Club, they are to be a good sturdy dogs but many are now inbreeding to get them smaller as people seem to think mini means tiny.

A few pics of my monster...

This is my sisters Schnauzer, Bob. I think she would describe him as cheeky, slightly subborn but very loveable. He is her first dog and she adores him and loves the breed. I don't know him very well because they live in Thailand - he is a Thai Schnauzer lol. She does say that he can be yappy and he is defo a little dog in a big dogs body

I have to admitt I like something a little cheeky with some character. I was bought up with terriers so am used to a bit of stubborness. Thank you for the reply, she is really lovely.

We have found a breeder who breeds black Schnauzers and am on her waiting list for some time this year.

Oh believe me they have plenty of character! I wouldn't change her for the world. One thing is she can be quite stand offish with people she doesn't know. But to me that isn't a bad thing. I woudl ratehr that than if she were stolen, quite happily leaving with the person.

Black schnauzers are beautiful, not very often you see them over here. I think I've seen about 4 in the past few years but the salt and pepper are very popular. Keep us updated

We had one as our family dog when I was younger. My Nan loved our dog so much that she also bought one. Used to get stopped loads on walks by people admiring the dog LOL.

ETA GinaB and KiBob - Your dogs are gorge!

I have had 2 standard schnauzers and they are the most wonderful dogs. Easy to train - great with other dogs and people - understanding and very adaptable. I pay £28 every 2 months to get them clipped and they look stunning. I had them when my son was little and they were excellent with him and his friends. Best dogs in the world!

Thanks so much for that feedback, I have read a lot of conflicting information about the temperament of standard Schnauzers and was worried about their suitability with children. I have heard that the miniatures have better temperaments but I have always prefered the size of the standard. I will def re-consider the standard now, thanks.

If you like the look of the Standard Schnauzer then take a look at the Russian Black Terrier - fabulous dogs but HUGE

I have a mini and they are brill fun :-)

My kids race him around and show jump him. He is the most loving loyal dog, and yes they are a bit stand offish... but that is a good thing as pointed out previously.

I take mine to work with me (I am a hairdresser at a nursing home) and everyone loves him!!!
