Miniatures - love em or hate em??

I absolutely love them, they make great appetizers ;)

Jokin HONEST, but I do really love them, they are just so adorable.
I was looking at the one to the right, and nearly fell off my seat when I saw the 3k price tag!!
I would have a couple if I could afford to keep them, just as pets, but then I'd have a couple of donkeys as well..................there is little hope for me if I ever get my own land, I will be no better off as will end up with more mouths to feed lol x

Nice well bred, well managed and cared for miniatures like yours are beautiful! I find their showing fascinating; the division of classes into the corresponding larger horses (I am thinking of the right thing here aren't I, how there is hunter etc?).

Badly looked after, managed and bred ones not so much  I don't see why people view them as little dogs or whatever, and needing no care!

Can't stand the little blighters!

Could never really see the point of them before TBH but mum bought one and she's rather amusing - unless you're trying to catch her in a pitch black muddy field and she's dodging away from the barn
She's great with the youngstock or as company when we're travelling a single horse to the races.
However teaching one of the terriers to ride her may not have been the cleverest move.... she can't half buck when she wants to and I pity any small child that ever gets put on board (unlikely but you never know):D

Yes we have classes for hack type, Hunter and Cob types :)

enfys - :):):)

i quite like ****lands, miniature horses and mini ****ties..

i cant get my head round those deformed dwarf things though

Unfortunatly mainly Dwarfs come about from people trying to breed to small and those breeders who do breed a dwarf not doing the most responsible thing and not repeating the breeding again :(

Quite rare in England, you will find more in America :(

I love them - the well proportioned ones of course.

Just like any miniature animal, there are well bred healthy animals, and dwarfed unealthy poorly little mites :(

I love this little guy, my friends daughters pony - snoopy.

I got my little mini shetlands as companions for Blue.

Absolutely adore them, they make me laugh on a daily basis and everyone who meets them adores them. Oh, except OH who hates them, doesn't see the point in them and hates being woken up at stupid o'clock in the mornings by people in the village ringing us to tell us they have found them in the churchyard/park/their garden!

I don't love em or hate em, I more don't understand the appeal... I think I'd personally prefer a dog....

Bx

hmm I agree, there does seem to be a lack of use for them. I was at sales the other week and they were selling for next to nothing, so people think they look cute pick one up, take it home in the back of the car. I'm not saying they don't look after them but undoubtedly they don't work out as lawnmowers.

they do seem to be overbred esp. the more cheaper mediocre ones and they don't make any money , the top stud ones seem to do ok tho!

basically I think they should be less of 'em bred as they aren't useful -agree with borderland baby about prefering proper shetlands.

I don't hate them, but when loads of useless horses are going spare because most people want something to ride, it seems a bit stupid to purposely breed useless little pet horses. If you want a pet horse, surely just pick one off the endless lists of companions looking for homes, why breed them specifically?

I see what you mean, but people think as Shetlands as lawnmowers and why would people want them?? I show mine and i must admit they are always placed, they are great movers and my one Shetland qualified for David Broome Championships twice! Just because Shetlands arnt ride-able for everyone doesn't mean you can't drive or show them. This is my view x

Love them! I love driving my pair of 32" Munchkins - they are very fast!

LisW they are adorable!

I love Inky too, I think most people do :) I find the whole miniature world rather interesting and could see myself getting into it if I could no longer ride for example. They are still equines!

For me it is the same thing with any breed/type really, I hope I can appreciate a good example, even if they are not my thing. I would never own a Section D but i love watching the really good ones in action in the show ring. I doubt I will ever want to own an arab, but I could admire photos of H Tobago all day long!

May i ask why??

Miniature horses to me look like Thoroughbreds that have been strunk in the wash, I especially don't like the exotic Arabian types. I don't like the look of them and like many people on here don't see the point of them.

On the other hand I do appreciate a good quality standard Shetland, like the ones bred for racing, showing, ridden and driving.

Bit  at people saying they don't have a use?

Had our miniature shetland as an 8 year old, broken to ride (literally just chucked the saddle on). My baby cousin rode her in a basket saddle when she was tiny then in a saddle right up until she was 4/5 and had long enough legs for a bigger pony. Gave my cousin bags of confidence. She hunted, pony clubbed, hacked, had lessons. She's still on our yard (9 years on) and has been ridden by so many children. She often goes on holiday to the neighbours to be ridden by their children too.

They are the perfect way to introduce children to riding. I will definately be having one when i have children and when theyre too big for it, it will be kept for life. Companion, weeder/lawnmower & pet :)
