Hi
What would you consider to be a minimum stable size for a middleweight allround 16.3 type horse? The horse would be kept in during the night and out most of the day (8am-4pm), with occassional spells in the stable 24/7 if the weather is really bad (no more than 2-3wks at a time), the horse would also be exercised 5 days out of 7 for a least an hr in addition to the turnout.
Would a 12ft by 12ft box be ok, or would I absolutely have to have a bigger stable?

Thanks

As a minimum I would say 12 x 12 certainly no smaller, ideally 12 x 14 or 14 x 14 should suffice, bigger if you're lucky enough to find one. Also depends on the headroom within the stable and doorway, as some stables have very low ceilings and doors depending on what they are made or if they have been converted from farm outbuildings.

12 x 12 will be absolutely fine.

A lot of much bigger horses than yours are kept in 8 x 8's and 8 x 10's over in my part of the world and they are perfectly fine. My own stables over here are only 10 x 12's; I had 16 x 14's in England but that was really unnecessary.

I have a 17 and a 17.1 who spend most of their lives in 12 x 12 stables and they're perfectly fine

Now I've just got to hope that the woman who is having a third look at the horse in question tomorrow doesn't want him so I can go back, confirm my thoughts and hopefully buy him - I'm not holding out too much hope though

Out of interest all the stables at Badminton are 12' x 10'. All the eventers are stabled in them (however big or small they are!!).

Temporary stables are 10x10 and often competition horses stay in them for almost the whole summer. My stables are 12x12 and our 16.2hh and 16.3hh are fine in them.

My 16.3 is in a 10 x 12 and she is just fine. Bigger is better (when it comes to stable of course

) but if your horse has plenty of turn out it should be fine
