Our self-harming TB scraped a small (50p sized) patch of hair off the outside of the point of his hock two weeks ago. I cleaned it twice a day and thought it would gradually heal. It hasn't done so - every time it looks like it's healed, he scrapes it again - obviously when he is lying in the field as there is often mud or grass in it. The vet came out last week and suggested trying some fuciderm for 10 days which I have now done. He is still bashing it around in the mud. It's not sore, there is no swelling, he's not lame - it's just bl**dy frustrating!

I'm about to get the vet back out but in the meantime, does anyone have any bright ideas how to keep this area clean? I'd thought of perhaps vet-wrapping a loose dressing on it but I suspect being the prat he is that it wouldn't be long before that got trashed. Although possibly it might be long enough for it to heal/toughen up.

Ideas would be gratefully received!

How do you see the dressing fitting amymay? This isn't asked in a sarcastic way, I'm just flummoxed by the shape of the hock and the fact that any dressing has to be loose enough to allow for full movement of the joint. I'm concerned that it will slip down and then cause more problems as he's a not-particularly-sane-youngster.

I was thinking of something like Mepore adhesive dressings, which are adhesive - with medical tape wrapped around a couple of times (although thinking about it it would probably only last half a day if that...)

It's a bu&&er of a place for a wound - and I have to say in your shoes, I'd be tempted to just leave it and let nature take it's course.

Nappies are brilliant for hocks! Use some vet wrap as a second binding as it can stretch with the movement. Doubtful it will stay on in the field though. I would spray with aluminium spray as it sounds like it just needs to dry up.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

I've used Vetericyn to no avail as he just lies down and bingo, it's all dirty again!

Will investigate Mepore and nappies. I hadn't thought of the aluminium spray - I'll put some of that on. I did have a silver-based dressing for my daughter who had a massive knee injury which healed incredibly quickly - I had thought of trying to cut one of those up and perhaps cover it with a nappy and/or vet wrap.

I would let nature take its course but I really don't like the fact that the wound is still being opened on a daily basis.

Thanks again - it's always good to have some options in hand :D

What about cut heal?:)

This. Brilliant stuff for awkward places, sticks like a sticky thing-I even used it on the frog of a horse which was turned out. It stayed on. Recently used it on a nasty scrape, just above the coronet, horse turned out all day, everyday. Hosed the cut, stuck some Cut Heal on it (just the once) and the scab is just starting to lift about a week later. Sorted :D

Only trouble is, it's a swine to get off the hair!

had one of these on my horses hip. if its infected it wouldnt heal. fuciderm should help then COVER IT UP so he cant keep scraping it. bit of gamgee under a hock boot should do it

Manuka honey is being used more and more for things like this and even recognised by some vets . It has amazing healing properties and sticks well would be ideal on this area .

Thank you all - some brilliant suggestions here, I've put some aluspray on under a hock boot lined with the mepilex dressing from my daughter's injury. Fingers crossed! Thank you for your suggestions.
