The last time our Airedale (Millie) had pups she developed a severe infection caused by the retention of some placenta. So with her second litter I wanted to take no chances and decided to visit the vets asap after the birth of the pups.
Millie had 6 pups the first time round but this time looked so much bigger that we considered there were at least 8-10 pups. We were surprised when she had 7 pups 4 days early. The birth went well and Millie was feeding the pups without a problem. Everything seemed pretty normal and the next day we went to the vets for a quick check.
He seemed to take an age to prod and feel her tummy, he then called for a second opinion before finally giving her a scan. The verdict - another pup, most probably dead as there was no movement. Apparently, the labour had stopped leaving the pup stranded inside for 24 hours . He said that Millie would need an emergency caesarean but could be collected in 2 hours and would still be able to feed the pups.
Two hours passed and the vet gave us a call - there were 2 pups and they were both alive!! We were shocked to say the least.
It is now 5 days later and mum and pups (2 boys, 7 girls) are doing well. The 2 late arrivals were a bit smaller than the rest of the litter but are catching up fast. Millie is getting over the op. remarkably well and is taking good care of the pups.
