No wonder non horsey people think we are a toffee nosed head up backside lot, must have been about 5 riders coming towards us, not a single smile even though we waved and daughter said good morning, not a stitch of Hi Viz either, hope they weren't going to ride on the busy road we had just driven off, maybe their long faces would scare off the traffic :D

I always meet riders out and about that look really grumpy! I'm sure people think I'm crazy though. I was out hacking on my own on the new boy this morning and he was being silly and spooky and I was laughing and smiling the whole way round as he is so much fun :D :D

I'm of the 'smile, nod, raise hand in thanks AND shout thank you if windows are open' school of acknowledging considerate drivers.

Locals must think I'm a loony. :D

I agree with this, the riders i see and slow down might raise a thank you hand but never smile. I did pass a friend once who never rides on the road as it scares her and she didn't smile either, she was just trying to get from a-b asap, i knew she looked terrified but others might have thought she was po faced. maybe all these people aren't stuck up, just terrified lol.
I always wave thanks, and give them a big smile, they just think i am simple but at least they don't think i am stuck up :D

Oh there are some right miserable people out there! I don't know what it takes to make them crack a smile. I love it when kids wave out of car windows at my mare, and so does she. I wave back, but hope that she doesn't or it could all get a bit awkward :D I also smile, nod, wave and shout thank you at anyone who give us enough room, slows even the tiniest bit, mind you I have also been known to question the parentage of those who nearly knock my leg off!

This thread made me laugh. I've also noticed a load of miserable riders out there recently. We passed three the other day on a really narrow road which has really high hedges. My OH pulled into a gateway to let them pass - not one acknowledged or smiled and not one wearing hi-viz......they were from a yard I used to be on years ago - glad I'm not there now if it makes them that miserable!!

I'm just in from a traumatic day of riding and road safety exam where I have been explaining to the kids that to keep drivers on side for ever, a big smile, hearty nod and a loud thank you really over emphasising the mouth movements for those with windows closed, will go a long way:D:D< like that!

Having said that, the kids looked justifiably terrified on several occasions, not least when a w***** of a coach driver drove his coach BETWEEN two ponies which were travelling in opposite directions :eek: and then he just shrugged at me as I was having palpitations on the side of the road.

I have a feeling the children learned some new words today :o:o

Was out with the racehorses today and everyone nodded and said "Hi", even got a "How are you?" from one of the lads. Normally I go out a lot later and only really come across grumpy mumps who get confused when I say "Afternoon". Was positively ecstatic to have a human response this morning :D

Well having just seem my Neighbours little Boy (8) doing a stonking trot along the cycle path on his shetland waving his hand shouting" Dank u Wel" at every cyclist and scooter that approached or passed him, then I am guessing we are a far happier bunch over here;-))

He even shouted it to me as my massive (in comparison to his) horse had a complete heart attack at the small pony and backed at speed into a field, hopefully his English is not good enough to understand what "For Gods you stupid ******ing great poof" means!

Why are they so miserable?!

It fecks me right off when i've slowed right down, crept pass giving them loads of room and the actually look at me but don't bother saying thanks!:mad: not even mouthing a thanks or a nod of the head

No wonder drivers don't bother slowing down for the rest of us!

Drives me mad... I just want to grab them and ask if they have any idea of just what I would give to be where they are instead of earthbound...

goes both ways though. I am forever stopping to let cars pass( we have lots of narrow roads) so I am not holding them up. do I ever get a thankyou or even an acknowledgement? NO. just a vacant "I know you are there but not even gonna look at you" expression. I always wave at the kiddies and if they are on foot, sometimes will let them stroke the beastie. I always say thanks and smile at drivers too. I think the funniest one was when i said morning to a mountain biker...he looked so shocked that I had actually spoken.

I have got so fed up of the riders I pass, both near my home and on the way to work, glaring at me when I slow down for them, that I now wind down my window and shout 'Thank you' as I go past slowly. I'm not sure they get it though.

Thats what I'm like, I hate riding on the roads and am too busy trying to remember to breath (I still nod in thanks to drivers tho, and will take my hands off the reins if feeling brave). When on my usual off road hacks i'm totally different and always smile and nod at the people who we pass...unless i've drifted off in to my own little world again.

LOL - so do I!!!

I've also been known to pull the car up at the point there are leaving the road and wait for them, just so I can point out that their miserable, inconsiderate behaviour is causing problems for other riders:o

I end up waving and smiling so much I'm sure people think I know them!
I know all the dog walkers on my regular hack routes, and lots of people know my horse's name and say hello to him too. I think it comes from being so happy that my horse will hack out, after 2 years of backing up, spinning and napping!

I know, on a thin path that I take B down to the currently unfenced bottom fields. I passed 5 riders that caused me and and the girl I was with to back up the lane with 4 horses (inhand) didn't get a single thank you

QR one of my pet hates atm, no hi vis and no thank you when you pass riders when driving.

As a family we try to acknowledge all drivers, if a neddy is having a 'moment', and we cant hold up a hand as a thank you, we make sure we give a big nod of the head.

Even 7 yr old son when out on the lead rein thanks every car that passes, he has done this since he was 2, he usually gets some lovely smiles and waves back which he loves.

Any kids that wave from passing cars always gets a smile and a wave back, and on really good days I have actually stopped to let kids that are out walking pat the horses (have to be in a really good mood for that though;))

it does annoy me when riders dont thank me as a driver for not running their horses over....

i slow, or stop wait till they get past - not even a look or a wave to say thanks... that really gets to me

i dont ride on the roads - too many nutters. i stick to the fields at the school

I often wonder how some riders manage in the saddle with the carrot they must have stuck up their backsides. Most of the people around us are fine, you do get the odd po faced one though.
