Missing her friends?

Last year I put my mare on working livery at a local riding stables to keep her working while i recovered from breaking my leg. The stables is on our usual hack route and since I have been hacking again, she goes completely stupid as soon as we get anywhere near the place.

I took her out on Sunday with a friend, and she was so excited and tense, I had to get off her because it was dangerous in the traffic. She calmed down as soon as I had led her quietly away but its such a nuisance because I have to hack that way to take her out.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced a similar thing when moving horse around yards and whether you have any ideas to help?

I thought she might be missing her friends as she seemed to like working with the other horses, although she does have a companion at home so shes not completely on her own.

Thanks for reading

Did they hack her out there? I took my bombproof old cob to Hartpury College on working livery, where he was never hacked out, and he was so dangerous in traffic and with bolting out hacking when I got him back that I eventually had to sell him

Not saying that that is what you need to do, but just wondered whether that may be the cause? Otherwise, she may just still be fitter than usual from being ridden so regularly and used to going back there and taking the mick?

I don't think they did hack her, she was just used in lessons and loved it. She has been much more jumpy generally out hacking than before, although like you suggest I had put that down to her being fitter. Its a shame you had to sell your boy, I'm also beginning to wonder whether she's right for me. Especially as I'm trying to get my confidence back with her after my fall last year.

I can't on how to help, but my mare was the same when I hacked her past the yard I bought her from on the way to a show. She has been off the yard for a couple of years, but she was desperate to move back in. It wasn't on my usual hacking so didn't have to go back again.

We did eventually move had back on to the yard when she has a terrible time when I took her to college with me. She ran round doing her 'hi honey I'm home' routine and settled in within a few minutes of being back. Most the horses had been there for doneys years.
