It was always my dream to have the horses at home and 6 months ago that came true for me and its wonderful. I wouldn't change it for the world although I think I have scarred my boys for life appearing for breakfast in an array of nightwear with interesting hair styles....
However....I feel so so lonely today. I have relocated to a new area and have made new friends but not the horsey kind as have 2 lame horses and haven't been able to get out to anything to meet fellow equestrians !!
I so miss the leaning on the gate with horsey friends chatting and debating various horsey issues, putting heads together and bashing ideas around. Normal people just glaze over when I start talking horse.
I am really feeling it tonight as my 20 year old TB has come in hopping lame. He is recovering from a nasty DDFT injury 12 months ago and has been field sound for about 3 months. I am praying he comes fully sound as he is my best mate and a joy to hack.I am also lucky enough to work from home so I do waft to the windows to check them regularly and I have noticed that he has been down several times asleep or resting today. Checked him and all fine at 2.30.He got up and trotted over to me fine.
The door bell went about 3 and it was my non horsey neighbour who was concerned as he was flat out again. I went out to get him and he is hopping on the injured leg. I just wanted to cry as in the back of my mind I know that it will be the end of the road if it doesn't heal.
Got him in the stable and no heat at all in the tendon but he is boiling hot over the coronary band so I am pretty sure a pus moment is brewing but how I have missed saying to my yard companions " You wouldn't just have a look at this for me" . " What do you think?"
A couple of heads can be so much better than one !! I just miss having someone who understands the worry I feel.
Waiting to speak to the farrier and vet and will see if anything happens over night but was just back at my desk and feeling a bit sad and lonely.
I know that being on a yard can be hell ( been their and done that ! ) but having a couple of horsey chums is just the best support in the world.
So my horsey friends from Wellington. I MISS YOU and I wish I had appreciated it more at the time.xxx

Fingers crossed it is nothing serious.
Despite living in a horsey place, and knowing a lot of the racing lot, I didn't grow up here and I really missed the pony club/riding club riders. I joined the local riding club (£20 pa) joined the Facebook page, and went along to as many course building/taking down evenings, and helped out at shows when I could.
I now feel I know a lot of horsey people round here, and I'm really looking forward to the next year, and less apprehensive about taking my horses out.
Good luck x

Fingers crossed he comes sound again, abcess perhaps? I know how you feel I have no one but myself to stand around and umm and ahh with and it can be so lonely. I find myself running to the drive to catch a glimpse of people hacking past my yard but I think they all just think I'm a lunatic.

LOL !! Your reply has cheered me up !!! I found myself hanging around the counter at Countrywide on saturday in the hop of horsey chat !!! farrier out first thing so will know more then but pretty sure your right.!! xxx

Glad I'm not the only one I also hack past a local riding centre but never see anyone really only once when my horse went lame and had to do the walk of shame back to our yard. I didn't even get a very friendly chat that time just judgment as If I had made my lame horse hack out but he was sound when we left our yard :( keep us posted on your tb.

I hate to say it but this is why I've moved back to a yard, I have my own place but rent it out so it pays my livery bill. I've moved to an amazing yard, good management and trainers, lovely people and all the facilities you could wish for, its bliss !

One other idea could you advertise for a livery for company ? Just be very very choosy to weed out any nutters !!!!

Oh dear, chin up. You're feeling a bit down because of your lad and then feeling horsey friends will make you feel better by offering you reassurance. Also, working from home means you are slightly isolated too, so you have a double whammy! Enjoy being your own boss ! Have you got a trailer or have any of your friends? Organise a few days out. Get the radio on to keep you company and go get involved with your local club or advertise for a hacking buddy in the local horsey stores :).

Remember, with the perks of livery also comes the cons of it too. Be thankful you're away from all that ! Although it's nice to have others around, people are work lol

I've had my horses at home for almost two years now. I do have friends locally who can box over to mine for a hack. I do make a real effort to chat to people I meet with horses nearby. If in walking the dog and see a neighbour with horses I do chat and ask if they want to hack and I've asked at the nearest livery yard if anyone want to hack out. It's obviously easier if you are riding as you can hire local arenas or xc courses and get to know people that way or via a riding club.
Have you posted on here where you live? I've found several HHOers in my village which really surprised me and have met a couple through a friend who's an instructor.

It does take a bit of time, a low front hedge/gate and an ability to chat to anyone but it's worth doing.
