Missing my mare

Not only has daughter (11) outgrown her share Shetland (and he’s retired) so she has nothing to ride, but we can’t visit our lovely in-foal mare either. 😔 She’s on full livery and being taken well care of, but the rule is that from now on (or rather starting a few weeks ago) we can’t see her - she has to stay in her field and we can’t go in.

I’m not regretting getting a pregnant mare, but part of me just wants to hire a trailer, turn up and whisk her away so I can look after her myself. But of course you don’t want to disrupt her life, she’s now very settled but I only got her a few months ago so obviously won’t move her again. My husband keeps saying the main thing is her welfare, which I agree with, but I just miss being in her presence - grooming her, cuddling her, giving her a small feed.

It won’t be until next winter I can really pick up where we started and it’s beginning to get me down.

Yard rule for when she’s with the other pregnant mares. And also when she’s got the foal until it’s weaned. I can meet the foal a few times like when it is going to get used to a head collar. That’s it.
Sorry, that's not on. I'm absolutely all for not just rocking up, and not for disrupting things. But that is not a normal condition for sending mares away to foal. Are you keeping the foal or have you sold it in utero?

I’m keeping it.

There are no studs near me as far as I know. I do trust that she’s in good hands - it’s a very reputable place. I am just dreading the next seven or eight months as I know I’ll be really missing her. I can’t put her on a diy yard and look after her myself as I’m far too busy with kids, work etc. 😔 plus have never done foaling.

In my area this really is a well regarded, suitable place. I asked all my local yards and only this one wanted her as yards don’t normally want the risks of foaling and also don’t have the expertise or the facilities required. So it’s not as easy as just taking her away. Also I’m wary of upsetting her - the safety of her and the foal is obviously the priority.
