Mistreated horses saved by new powers

Animal protection officers in Wirral have made use of new powers to save two horses in danger of dying of neglect.

The horses, a mare and her foal, were rescued from a farm after a warrant was issued by magistrates under the Animal Welfare Act.

The horses are now being cared for at Barnston Riding School.

Thank goodness the Animal Welfare Act has been updated. Who knows what the outcome could have been for these horses under the old law.

Wonder if there was any 'welfare' involvement - and if there was, why the horses weren't removed by them??

It sounds like it could have been the local authority animal health officers who carried out this rescue.

As far as I'm aware, they have more enforcement powers than the RSPCA and under the new law, can enter premises and seize animals without the owners consent or a police escort.
