A continuation of my 'scabby ears' post.

I took Basil to the vets and he was diagnosed with mites, so I have been given a frontline type of treatment to put on the back of his neck every 2 weeks and to come back in 6 weeks after treatment if no better - also been told that it may take a while for the hair to grow back on his ears and that he may be itchy for a while.

Problem is that he keeps scratching it, so much so that tonight there was blood and puss coming out of the scabs where he had been scratching so much. What can I put on to ease the discomfort? He just looks like it is really bothering him, poor chap and the ears are quite hot, can anybody suggest something to soothe it?

Many thanks

My dog had this, changed vets, turned out not to be mites at all (his sister's ears were clean as a whistle) and it was the result of allergies.
TBH it was a bit of a lazy diagnosis of my dog - itchy ears = mites.

I got a second opinion and was very glad I did. Nothing to do with mites and is managed with a low protein diet, Epi-Otic ear wash, 4xPiriton a day.

You can try a light smear of aloe vera gel to take the heat out of the ears.

If it is mites you could look up a product called Thornit. It is not licensed and it is very strong but it seems to work. Do not put it on an open wound.

ETA I read your last post again, if this has only happened since you moved, rule out an allergy to a plant or tree in the area, carpet, something environmental.

We moved in November but it only started a few weeks ago. She said it was typical of mites because it's around one of his eyes aswell, but if no improvment after treatment she would do a scraping to be sent to the lab.

They gave me nothing for his ears which I was really surprised about. I will look up the suggested products and hopefully he won't be so itchy. I feel really bad for him as it must be very uncomfortable.

Thanks for the advice x

Personally I would go straight back to the vets and insist on a skin scrape. I hate the way that vets sometimes treat for what they think it could be without a proper diagnosis. it takes seconds for a skin scrape, and a very quick result and then you will know for sure what it is. I would not be putting anything on the ears without knowing what was wrong. He also probably should have a collar put on to prevent him scratching his ears as once he is in a cycle of itch scratch itch scratch it is very difficult to break because of the damage he will do to himself.

Thanks for the advice...

I have bought him a collar and washed the ears in hibiscrub and found a gentle antiseptic anti-scratch spray, which I will try to do 2 to 3 times a day. Will see if the combination helps at all, but if no change in a couple of days, back to the vets we go.... x
