My new Clydesdale came to me with next to no mane and the top of her tail was rubbed down too. I thought sweet itch but the vet came out yesterday and said it was mites.

Everyone talks about feather mites but has anyone experienced them in their horses mane? I'm going to inject her with dectomax and possibly again in a couple of weeks.

She never bites or stamps her feet so I don't think she has them in her feathers....which is good I know but did wonder if it was a bit odd to just get them in the mane.

Cheers.

Also those electric nit combs are brill if they are mites in the hair rather than in the skin. (If it's more a scabies style mite this wouldn't work)

Is she being ( or has she been ) fed any alfalfa? One of my cobs rubbed his mane and tail like this, he looked as though he had sweet itch except it was the middle of winter. I stopped feeding any feed containing alfalfa ( not easy!) and he stopped itching immediately and started re growing his mane and tail.

I've only had her 8 weeks and I've fed her top spec top chop lite which I believe doesn't contain any alfalfa. Before that she had a scoop of horse and pony nuts with her previous owner. She gets a apple a day too and ad lib hay.

Top spec chop lite is an alfalfa and straw mix. I was feeding a similar chop, apparently some manufacturers changed the oil they dress the alfalfa in. I used to be able to feed the same chaff with no problems.

Oh hell.....and there was me thinking I was doing the right thing. Thanks for that. Think I'll stick to an apple a day! Lol

Try spraying with Frontline spray. You can get it from the vet. Worked on my boys feather mites. Never heard of feeding alfalfa causing itching. Must look into that because my lad has a bit of a neck itchy thing going on too.
