OK, it seems that a horse in my lads 'herd' had mites 3 weeks ago and was treated for it by the vet. My friend who has just left has just found out that her horse also has mites - her horse was kept in this herd.

I m worried as due to the weather/state of fields they have all been kept together in barns.

So chances are that its spread yes?

Also, if my lad had got them then who will pay for treatment as he is on WL and I have no say in how he is kept, and they buy and sell horses as well and keep them all together (fab I know!! )

It's one of them things....can't just expect other people to pay for it because one horse gets it, it'snot like they wanted the mites to start with either! Ours gets them every year despite every prevention and it's just this time of year unfortunately.

Far as I see original horse was treated for it so no negligance or non-prevention has been made...mites are common and just happen unfortunately.

Only can suggest keeping his legs oiled up as mites hate this kind of environment to harder for them and keep the feathers off and mite jab.
You'll have to check your livery contract for veterinary treatment responsability.

Sorry, not much more help!

They never told anyone else that the horse had it - and it was the YARD OWNERS horse that had it.

So they knew, and never took that horse out of the herd.

I know its 'one of those things' but to not tell anyone that a horse in very close contact to others has it is not on. Especially as it has obv spread as friends horse has it and has moved so the new yard are fuming.

I would take his feathers off if I could, but the fields are soo muddy that if they go out again he will risk mud fever with no feathers.

I cant get up to him more than twice a month, he is one working livery.

I am liable for anything that happens and is not a direct result of the working livery. I feel though that given that I have no say on WHERE he is kept - as in what field - and he will be used in the school next to infected horses then well, its not my fault, and was causd by the YO horses then its THIER responsibility to treat it.

We are just really really pissed off!

We also hope that they told the farrier that does all the horses as if most of them have mites/lice then he is doing like 10 of them each visit he may be passing them on to other yards.

Best thing to avoided mud fever if you take feathers off is baby oil. Has worked for my mare. mud just slids off. Even the cheap baby oil you get from asda will do . put loads on soon stop it.
