Mites!

do you mean mites or lice? if you can see little things crawling around in their mane (i normally find forelock the most inhabited bit) then it's probably lice, which can use powder, shampoo or i use spot-on treatment which is actually for cows and sheep but i find it thebest treatment:)

No i think she has mites in her feathers. But im not sure my sister (Toast) says she reckons it is but she doesn't know how you treat them.xxx
 
yeah they do get feather mites and i think on sign is stomping their feet. i think lots of people use frontline/ spot on treatment or as tangoharvey says the vet will give injection:D
 
I used frontline on my mares feathers and it worked. It's not licensed for horses so got my dad to get some from the vet saying that it was for his dog. One treatment and then another ten days later as they lay eggs which hatch out, have had no problems since.
 
Ah i see. I only think she has mites. She is a welsh D X Exmoor and has a bit of feather and in it, it looks red and sore and a bit scabby and crusty but i haven't actually seen and creepy crawlies! What do you think?
 
You can use frontline or get the Vet to give Dectomax injections to get rid of the blighters & then keep them at bay with pig oil & sulphur (Theresa _F does a long & v good pm on how to use it). Once they get them it's really a case of keeping them under control.
 
I've heard that Pig Oil and Sulpher is good for feather mites; you just brush/sponge it on in the heel area and on and around the feathers and brush it well in apparently, and midges, insects (and presumably mites) can't get a grip on it coz its oily and leave well alone! My boy had a nasty skin condition on the backs of his knees (is it the old-fashioned word "mallenders" or "fallenders" - I can never remember!!!) and I put some of this stuff on (when you mix it up it looks awful, like someone's puked) and it did seem to do it some good, so I slapped on some more and it looked even better! So worth a try; I've used frontline in the past - a dot on each heel/bulb area, BUT am a tad worried about the chemical in it, might not be doing the horse any good?

My vet also in the past suggested a wormer containing invermectin - you give two doses to clear the mites up, but again there are risks, one of them being colic and the other being that you're building up tolerance of wormers which you don't really want.

I'd try the pig oil and sulpher - see how it goes.
 
We got the injection for our mare and it didn't really make much difference. We have been putting pig oil on and it helps, but to be honest when we clipped her feather off altogether and washed her legs worked best.
 
I have 2 traditionals and couldn't work out why one was stamping his feet. I always put pig oil on the one I show every 2 weeks but the other I didn't bother and the poor thing has got mites my other is fine and they shared a stable! I only found out that the stomping was mites when talking to a lady at a show at the weekend.

The cheapest place for pil and sulphur is sussex cobs - they sell on ebay as well but its more expensive on there. Direct its roughly £25 delivered for 5 lts but think you can buy it in 1lts but it will probably only do them once!
