How do people prevent and treat feather mites? New horse is prone to them so will be intresting to see peoples advice. She doesnt do clipping without vet sedation as well.
I inject Dectomax (doramectin) 3 times a year. It's not licensed for use in horses but then neither is Frontline, or Ivermectin (the injection vets usually use). It works for me & Jasper!
Teresa_F on here does a fantastic PM about pig oil & sulphur, might be worth messaging her if you don't like the idea of an unlicensed injection!
I used Dermoline, which is a shampoo. You have to use it once and then repeat 7-10days later i think. But I used to do alot of showing with my mare who was prone to them, and so she was bathed regularly with it which seemed to stopp any reoccurance. I made sure in winter when we wernt showing her legs where done about once a month. when showing she was bathed most weekends!!
Hope this helps
I have a heavily feathered horse who is prone to mites too.
He is also not good with clipping his legs.
I have the dectromax injection from the vet also and also use front line once a month.
I also have this brill solution made up from the vets which has steriods and wormer in it and this has worked amazingly well.
I have trimmed where the worse areas are for the mites but you wouldnt know looking at his feet, looks like he has full foot of feather!
Unfortunately though, some horses just dont seem to cope with the mites well when they are feathered. A livery at my yard has to keep her horse fully clipped.
