Hi I have been offered the above at a good price from someone I know. I need to replace my towcar which has been scrapped and am interested but worried about repair costs. Would be a second vehicle and used mainly for towing most weekends. I keep hearing things about cylinder heads....my last car cleaned me out as i mistakenly replaced major parts at great expense. This car has only done about 50000 miles.

I wouldn't - I've heard of too many of these blowing up when not very old, and Mitsubishi's head gaskets go for fun.

ETA if you want a pick up have a look for a Toyota Hilux, they live forever :)

Consider the engine size carefully. The one where I work is a heavy great vehicle with a 2.5litre engine. I doubt it would tow the skin off a rice pudding

We've had 3 L200 pickups now and have loved them all. 1 we ran into the ground, no 2 got nicked and no 3 we did have engine problems with - but that was because the previous owner had been running it on bio diesel we later found out!

Ours have towed all sorts, they never got stuck anywhere - including the horrendous snow we had a few years ago. They have always been real workhorses - provided you have the right tyres on! They were a bit heavy on fuel but not as bad as I expected - we towed a trailer with horse down to Oswestry and back (about 200 mile round trip) and used £70 of diesel which I thought was quite good.

Ours were always older ones (newest was 2007) - the only bad thing I've heard about the newer ones are electrical faults - apparently they have lots of electric things that can go wrong on them in comparison to the older ones.

We have a discovery at the moment - when that gives up the ghost we'll be having another L200.

Thank you madlady a different slant on it altogether! This one will have been looked after as the people are very particular, they are old and don't need it any more.

We have an L200, older than the one you are looking at I think it is 03. It is great, hasn't needed a spanner near it, engine perfect, great off road. It is very heavy and very thirsty and has the turning circle of the Titanic. Tows very well though and I've never been stuck. We also tow cattle off road in very bad conditions as well. This is my main towing vehicle and I've been all over in it.

We also have a Hilux. This one is our third, the first two were great, this one is a heap of poop. It has been recalled more times that I can remember, it is flimsy, always needing attention. It is much newer than the L200 but has had a huge amount on money spent on it and that isn't including the 'free' bits they have done to the wretched thing. It drives like a car and uses less fuel than the L200 but isn't as good towing off road.

thank you all for your replies. I have viewed the car and they want £4000 for it, it is a 2006 model think they said 2.5 engine-no major repairs needed since they bought it at 9 months old. less than 50000 miles. Just wondering if i will buy just in time for everything to start failing.........it has certainly been looked after, priced to reflect a couple of small dents at the back.

We have a "new shape" it is the basic model, but it has been great. No trouble at all. I lost the back end once when going round a corner, so tend to progress in a stately fasion. Very good in the snow. Used every day on the farm. Good for towing, but it is a LONG combination.

Look up Honest John in telegraph.

Have a newer one(62 reg) and love it! Use it as an everyday car as well as a tow vehicle. Tows 2 easily and is pretty good off road too.Mine is the Trojen model so is slightly shorter in the back so easier to fit in parking spaces! You have to respect all pick ups when "cornering" as in my experience they are all light on the back end especially when not loaded, I've found the Hi-lux the worst! The dealer advised us to put it in 4wd in wet/icy conditions to help with this.

It is a really long car. Good advice re cornering. I have a Vauxhall Astra for shopping etc. so wouldn't plan on trying to park the L200 in Tesco! I am worried that this car has never needed any major repairs, does that mean they are just waiting for me....friend tells me she has spent £2800 on clutch and cylinder head on similar car.....

Look at an Isuzu if you can find one. Older ones are 3L and have a 3 ton tow. I've an '04 one, 80,000 on the clock and it has never let me down. It has done a 1000 mile trip towing 2 horses at least once a year for the last 7 years, not a squeak out of it.

How frustrating, I hate it when people change their minds after you have gone to the trouble of viewing, researching etc. Hope you can find what you are wanting elsewhere.

I think they have decided they could get more for it, but I wish they would be honest about it, the man is old and doesn't need a car like that, he said so himself-think it is about money really.
